Asian Music Round-up

As you'll know if you follow this blog, I'm a fan of Asian music. I listen to mainly J-pop and K-pop but also some occasional other types such as Indonesian and Vietnamese. In the past I've written two posts featuring Asian music from different genes. You can see them below:

The 2nd post was in 2019, so today I'm doing a round-up of newer posts, plus featuring a couple of new artists. The genres are listed in alphabetical order. :)  

 

Note: I also like Bollywood/Hindi music but as with the previous posts, I'm going to stick to East Asian music here. For some Bollywood and more Indian music, see the bottom of the post.

 

C-pop

While my favourite Asian music genres are Japanese and Korean pop, I also like Chinese music and have been listening to more C-pop in the past few years. In 2018 I started a "semi-regular" feature called C-pop Saturday. You can find the C-pop Saturday posts from 2018 and up to September 2019 in the Asian Music- Part 2 post.

Indonesia

I know a few Indonesian singers, but not many. My favourite is Anggun. I came across NIKI in 2019 and I've heard a few Rich Brian songs. See the songs from Head in the Clouds II post below for Brian's duet with Chung Ha (under Various).

Afgan feat. Jackson Wang- M.I.A

Afghan just came up in my YouTube recommendations! His full name is Afgansyah Reza and he is from a Muslim Minangkabau family. He started out in the music business when he recorded an album with his friends, which led to him being offered a contract by the recording studio. 

Afgan released his debut album Confession No.1 in April 2008. To date he has brought out 3 more albums- The One (2010), L1ve to Love, Love to L1ve (2013) and Sides (2016); and an EP, Bersihkan Dirumu (2009). His singles include Terima Kasih Cinta, Knock Me Out, Percayalah featuring Raisa, Be Alright, say i'm sorry and M.I.A.

This is M.I.A, Afgan's latest single. It features Hong Kong singer/rapper and GOT7 member Jackson Wang (see above under C-pop). The video just premiered today. It's an English language R'n'B song about promising you won't leave your partner. Kind of gives me Jeremih Birthday Sex vibes!

Chi Pu- SHH! CHỈ TA BIẾT THÔI

This is SSH! CHỈ TA BIẾT THÔI by Chi Pu. Her real name is Nguyễn Thùy Chi (Nguyễn is her surname) and she is Vietnamese singer and actress.  She started her career in 2009 when she was a Top 20 contestant in Miss Teen Vietnam, and went on to become a teen idol, getting her first TV and film roles in 2013.

Chi Pu launched her music career in 2017, with the K-pop inspired electropop single Tu Hom Nay (Feel Like Ooh) Her other singles include TALK TO ME (Có Nên Dừng Lại), ANH ƠI Ở LẠI, Fighting Fighting from the soundtrack of her web series Tỉnh Giấc Tôi Thấy Mình Trong Ai (Wake Up), SHH! CHỈ TA BIẾT THÔI and MƠ ANH. She released her debut EP Love Story in Korea in October 2017. 

SHH! CHỈ TA BIẾT THÔI is from the film Chi Chi Em Em (Sister Sister in English which was released in 2019. The video was uploaded in December 2019. It means "Shh!! Only We Know" or "Ssh! Only two of us know" in English. Click "Subtitles/closed captions" for English subtitles! :)

25th Anniversary of Mariah Carey's Butterfly Album

My favourite singer Mariah Carey recently released a 25th anniversary edition of her 6th studio album Butterfly. The original album was released on 16th September 1997 and featured songs such as her hit single Honey, The Roof and My All. It was actually the first album I ever bought (on cassette tape, lol) and I still consider it one of my fave MC albums. :) Butterfly was the first album that Mariah had more control over and it is R'n'B, rather than the pop (and later pop/R'n'B) of her previous releases. New J.Lo and JoJo Music

Two singers I like, Jennifer Lopez and JoJo have new music out, so today I'm sharing it on the blog! Jennifer Lopez- Baila Conmigo First up is Jennifer Lopez, whose new song is the Spanish language Baila Conmigo (Dance with Me). It's a cover of the 2018 single by Dayvi featuring Kelly Ruiz . Debut XG Mini Album

Japanese girl group XG have released their 1st mini album. It's called NEW DNA and was released on 27th September. XG (whose name is short for Xtraordinary Girls) made their debut in March last year and have brought out 7 singles so far- Tippy Toes, MASCARA, LEFT RIGHT/SHOOTING STAR double single), GVRL GANG , TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. The first 3 songs (or 4 including the double single) aren't on the mini album. The concept behind NEW DNA is that of being a "new species" free from conventions and limitations .  Although the group is Japanese, their creation was inspired by Korean music and they are based in South Korea. They have released songs in English so far and have been described as a global group and "X-pop". NEW DNA consists of 6 tracks- HESONO, X-GENE, GVRL GANG, TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. It is an R'n'B/pop mini album with influences from other genres, such as K-pop, dance and hip hop. My favourite song is PUPPET SHOW. I al
