Asian Music- Part 2

Back in 2017 I did a post about Asian music called Asian Music- K-pop, J-pop and Beyond. You can read that here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2017/02/asian-music-k-pop-j-pop-and-beyond.html

Here is the follow-up with some round-ups of different posts on Star Sparkle, and a couple of new artists (not previously featured before). I'm listing the genres in alphabetical order this time. :)

Note: I also like Bollywood/Hindi music but as with the first post, I'm going to stick to East Asian music here. For some Bollywood post links see the bottom of the post.

C-pop

I've been listening to more Chinese pop in recent years. Last year I started an occasional feature called C-pop Saturday. I only did 4 C-pop Saturday posts during 2018 but have done 4 so far this year, with one more planned for next month. Check out these posts below for links to the C-pop Saturday 2018 posts and the 2019 ones to date:

Indonesia

I don't know that many Indonesian singers but I listen to a couple. My favourite is Anggun. I linked to her posts in the first post, but here's a newer one from last year:

Anngun- What We Remember (English):  https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2018/03/weekly-music-video_41.html

This year I discovered NIKI who (like Lexie Liu) is signed to the American media company 88rising. Her music is mainly in English and R'n'B style. Check out a couple of her songs below:

See U Never: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2019/06/weekly-music-video.html

Indigo (latest single): https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2019/10/weekly-music-video.html

NIKI- La La Lost You

Plus here is La La Lost You, a new song from 88rising's new album Head in the Clouds II. This is the lyric video.

And here's  a group I haven't previously featured:

lol

lol are a Japanese singing and dancing mixed gender group formed by Avex Trax (the same record label that manages Koda Kumi, and Namie Amuro until her retirement) in September 2014. Their group name comes from the internet slang for "laugh out loud" and is written in lower case. The group consists of 5 members- Naoto Komiyama, Yusuke Satou, Hibiki Kouketsu, Honoka Aoki and Moka Asada (stage name Moca).

lol released their official debut single fire! in summer 2015. It was used as the opening theme for the Japanese TV series Buzz Rhythm. Their other singles include Boyfriend/Girlfriend (two separate songs), love & smile, Sayonara no Kisetsu/lolli lollli (different songs) and brave up!! To date they have brought out 2 albums, lolol (2017) and lml (2018) and several digital albums, including fire! debut edition, Aitai Kimochi/nanana and love & smile   Their music videos include trigger, #love.xx and like that. (Most song and album names are written in lower case).

Here is the video for #love_xxx which was released in October.

Update 27/1/23: Avex videos are blocked from playing on 3rd party applications, but you can watch it fine on YouTube. :)

Also check out the video for like that! Part 2 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQVsOgD3Ky8

As in K-pop, I don't think there are as many mixed gender groups as single gender ones (one of the most well known current South Korean ones is K.AR.D), but I think there are maybe a few more in J-pop.

Thai

My favourite Thai singer is Tata Young  and I linked to a few of her videos in the last Asian music post.

I don't know very many Thai singers but Ten from the K-pop group NCT  (and subgroup NCT U) is from Thailand (the only Thai member). You can watch the video for  his 2017 debut solo single here (English language): https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2017/05/weekly-music-video_31.html

Also see  under the K-pop section  for his song with band member Taeyong.

Waii feat. Timethai- Very Well

Waii (real name Panyarisa Thienprasidhi) is a singer from Bangok. She is signed to the Thai record label Kamikaze. One of her most well known albums is Waii: Playgirl. She has also released an album called V: What Da Heck (2014) and her singles include Break, Refuse, Trilogy with KnomJean and Gavin of  T-hop (hip hop/Thai pop fusion) group 3.2.1, Tarm Pid Munk (What Da Heck),and Very Well.

25th Anniversary of Mariah Carey's Butterfly Album

My favourite singer Mariah Carey recently released a 25th anniversary edition of her 6th studio album Butterfly. The original album was released on 16th September 1997 and featured songs such as her hit single Honey, The Roof and My All. It was actually the first album I ever bought (on cassette tape, lol) and I still consider it one of my fave MC albums. :) Butterfly was the first album that Mariah had more control over and it is R'n'B, rather than the pop (and later pop/R'n'B) of her previous releases. It also has pop and hip hop influences.  The expanded edition contain 8 extra tracks (the original standard edition has 12)- a duet version of Whenever You Call with Brian McKnight , a new take on The Roof featuring Brandy , live versions of Butterfly and My All, acapella versions of Fourth of July and Outside, an Amorphous Anniversary Club Mix of Butterfly (with DJ Amorphous ) and a remix of Honey (Another Taste of Honey David Morales Mix). I had previously heard the

Watch the video with the original mix here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZM52M6cfSA Baila Conmigo (J.Lo version) came out on 10th October. This is an audio but if there's a music video later, I'll update the post. :) Want more J.Lo? Debut XG Mini Album

Japanese girl group XG have released their 1st mini album. It's called NEW DNA and was released on 27th September. XG (whose name is short for Xtraordinary Girls) made their debut in March last year and have brought out 7 singles so far- Tippy Toes, MASCARA, LEFT RIGHT/SHOOTING STAR double single), GVRL GANG , TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. The first 3 songs (or 4 including the double single) aren't on the mini album. The concept behind NEW DNA is that of being a "new species" free from conventions and limitations .  Although the group is Japanese, their creation was inspired by Korean music and they are based in South Korea. They have released songs in English so far and have been described as a global group and "X-pop". NEW DNA consists of 6 tracks- HESONO, X-GENE, GVRL GANG, TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. It is an R'n'B/pop mini album with influences from other genres, such as K-pop, dance and hip hop. My favourite song is PUPPET SHOW. I al
