Turkish Music

I haven't done any posts about Turkish music for a while, so I thought today I'd do another Turkish themed post. :)

In 2017 I posted a round-up of Turkish and Arabic music on the blog. You can see it here:

And here are a couple more posts:

Weekly Music Video

Today's video is Womxnly by Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai. The song is in support of transgender people. "Womxn" is a modern spelling of "woman/women" that is thought to be more inclusive of transwomen/people who weren't born female but now identify that way. Another spelling is "womyn" which from what I understand, is more associated with feminism rather than transgender inclusivity. Read more here:

Womxnly is Chinese language (I think Mandarin), but if you view the video on YouTube itself and click "Subtitles/closed captions" you can see English subtitles and get a full understanding of the song. :) This is the official dance video and was uploaded in February.

Update 20/4/19: It's from Jolin's latest album UGLY BEAUTY which was released in December.

Weekly Music Video

Today's video is Nobody by Miraa May. She was born in Algeria and moved to the UK with her family when she was young.  Growing up in Tottenham, London,  she was influenced by Western R'n'B and hip hop, emo rock, Algerian rai and Arabic music. In 2012 she released her first acoustic EP The Beginning and went on to work with American record producer SaLaAM ReMi, under whose guidance she worked further on her EP N15.

Last November Miraa released Care Package, her debut EP for Island Records. Nobody is from Care Package and the video came out in January. The song is about being fearless, taking a stand for what you believe in and love. Miraa has said that she wanted the music video to be inclusive of all races and religions, and to spread a positive vibe.

Weekly Music Video

This week's video is Vai by Calema, a Portuguese music duo originally from São Tomé and Príncipe, islands off the west coast of Africa. It's made up of brothers António and Fradique Mendes Ferreira, who have been singing since they were young. They went on to study music in Portugal and later moved to France. The name "Calema" means a  ripple on the African coast, as the waves always carry something special with them, and they as a duo bring music, smiles and culture. (I hope this is right, since I translated it into English from their Facebook page using Google Translate!). :)

Calema have released one album, A Nossa Vez (A.N.V)(which translates as "Our Turn" in English) which features the popular single of the same name. This year they enteredFestival da Canção 2019, the Portuguese music competition to select Portugal's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. Their song A Dois (For Two) got to the final. The winner was Conan Osíris with Telemoveis (Mob…

Priyanka and Nick Videos

In December Indian actress Priyanka Chopra married American singer and actor Nick Jonas. I thought it would be cool to do a post featuring both of their videos. :)

Priyanka Chopra Jonas

Priyanka won the Miss India and Miss World beauty pageants in 2000. She started out in Kollywood (the Tamil film industry) playing the part of Priya in Thamizan (2002). She then made her debut in Bollywood (the Hindi movie industry) with the 2003 film The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, alongside Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta. She went on star in Andaaz  (2003) and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004) but her career really took after she starred as Sonia in Aitraaz, the 2004 remake of Hollywood film Disclosure. Her other movies include Barsaat, Krrish, Don, Dostana and Gunday.

In 2015 Priyanka made her American TV debut when she starred as lead character Alex Parrish in the TV series Quantico, the first South Asian to play the lead in an American network drama series. She has also acted in American films Baywatch (2017…
