Bollywood Playback Singers- Shreya Ghoshal

Last year I started a new series on the blog called Bollywood Playback Singers. A playback singer is someone who records the music for films. The first singer I featured was Sunidhi Chauhan. You can see that post here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2020/06/bollywood-playback-singers-sunidhi.html

Today I'm featuring Shreya Ghoshal.

Shreya was born in West Bengal and grew up in Rajasthan. She wanted to be a playback singer since she was little and had musical training from a young age. In January 1998 she released her debut studio album Bendhechhi Beena, which features covers of classic Bengali songs.

Her career received a boost when she won the TV reality show Sa Re Ga Ma aged 16 and drew the attention of the mother of Indian film maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. This led to Shreya making her Bollywood singing debut, providing the vocals for Paro (played by Aishwarya Rai) in the hit 2002 film Devdas.

Shreya's singing credits include Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai from Jism, Yun Hi Dil Ko Agar, Dhalne Lagi Hai Raat and Deewana Dil from Inteha, Saainsein Gulne Lagi from Aetbaar, Shikdum from Dhoom, the title song from Aashiq Banaya Aapne, several songs from Om Shanti Om, Ooh La La and Twinkle from The Dirty Picture, and Chal Tera Shukriya from Sadak 2.

She also provides vocals for other Indian film industries, including Tollywood (Telugu), Kannada, Kollywood (Tamil) and Marathi. In addition, Shreya has released her own singles, her first ghazal album Humnasheen (2014) and appeared on compilation albums.

Here are some of her songs. :)

Title song from Aashiq Banaya Aapne

Shreya provided the female vocals for the title song from Aashiq Banaya Aapne in 2004. I featured the video as part of my Emraan Hashmi Videos back in 2015: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2015/12/emraan-hashmi-songs.html

The video is now age restricted so not able to be played on embedded sites anymore,  but you can watch directly on YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsNIyWF2A7w

Teri Yaadon Mein from The Killer

This post of Nisha Kothari and Emraan Hashmi videos features Shreya as the female vocal for the song Teri Yaadon Mein from the Killer: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2016/03/nisha-kothari-and-emraan-hashmi-videos.html

Shreya sang Saans from Jab Tak Hai, along with Mohit Chauhan. I featured it as a Weekly Music Video in 2016: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2016/11/weekly-music-video_9.html

Tere Bina

In January 2018 she released her own single Tere Bina. I shared it in my New Music for 2018- Part 2 post.

Dola Re Dola from Devdas

One of the most popular songs from Devdas, the 2002 hit film starring Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai (now Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and Madhuri Dixit. In this video Shreya sings Aishwarya's vocals. The other singers are Kavita Krishnamurphy and K.K.

Actor Salman Khan appears in the ErosNow introduction! The video starts about 18 seconds in.

Update 5/3/22: They removed the video from Eros for some reason, so here's another upload:

Ooh La La Tu Hai Meri Fantasy from The Dirty Picture

This is Ooh La La Tu Hai Meri Fantasy (Ooh La La You Are My Fantasy in English), from the 2011 film The Dirty Picture. The cast includes Vidya BalanEmraan Hashmi and Naseruddin Shah.

In the video Vidya's vocals are sung by Shreya and Naseruddin's by Bappi Lahiri.

Angana Morey

This is Shreya's latest single. She has teamed up with her brother Soumayadeep Ghoshal for the song Angana Morey. It's a mix of Indian classical music, electronic pop, trance, orchestral and other elements and was released on 3rd February.

25th Anniversary of Mariah Carey's Butterfly Album

My favourite singer Mariah Carey recently released a 25th anniversary edition of her 6th studio album Butterfly. The original album was released on 16th September 1997 and featured songs such as her hit single Honey, The Roof and My All. It was actually the first album I ever bought (on cassette tape, lol) and I still consider it one of my fave MC albums. :) Butterfly was the first album that Mariah had more control over and it is R'n'B, rather than the pop (and later pop/R'n'B) of her previous releases. It also has pop and hip hop influences. The expanded edition contain 8 extra tracks (the original standard edition has 12)- a duet version of Whenever You Call with Brian McKnight , a new take on The Roof featuring Brandy , live versions of Butterfly and My All, acapella versions of Fourth of July and Outside, an Amorphous Anniversary Club Mix of Butterfly (with DJ Amorphous ) and a remix of Honey (Another Taste of Honey David Morales Mix). I had previously heard the D...

New Unexpected

We're finally getting the new season of the reality TV series Unexpected in the UK! Season 3 was shown in the US last summer , and I wondered when we'd get it here. I don't have any online streaming services so thought I'd just watch clips on YouTube, lol. However it's now starting here in early March. Similar to the popular MTV franchise Teen Mom , Unexpected focuses on teen parents. The first series featured 3 couples expecting babies- Lily Bennett and her boyfriend James Kennedy who have daughter Aaliyah, now 2;  Mckayla Adkins and partner Caelan Morrison who have son Timothy, also known as Timmy (and now daughter Gracelynn , born in January 2019), and  Lexus Scheller and boyfriend Shayden Massey who have daughter Scarlett. Season 2 saw the departure of Lilly and the addition of 3 new pregnant girls and their partners- Laura Barron and her boyfriend (now husband) Tylor Stawmyor who have son Lucas (and have since had another baby , a 2nd son, who is named Leo), ...

South Indian Videos

I've written several Bollywood posts this year but I don't feature South Indian music/films as much. So today I'm sharing some music and dance videos from Tollywood ( the Telugu language film industry) and Kollywood (the Tamil language film industry). :) Oo Antava Mawa- Pushpa- Dance Cover by Sonali First up is a dance cover of the song Oo Antava Mawa..Oo Oo Antava from the 2021 Tollywood film Pushpa: The Rise- Part 1 . I previously featured a dance cover of Oo Antava Mawa in a Dance Videos post in August last year. That one is by Rang De and you can see it here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2023/08/dance-videos.html This cover is by Indian choreographer Sonali Bhaduria, from LiveToDance with Sonali and was uploaded in January 2022. It's a shorter video.   For more on Pushpa and to watch the official Oo Antava Mawa video, check out my Tollywood Videos Round-up 2 post from September 2023: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2023/09/tollywood-videos-round-up-2.html ...
