Current Favourite Songs

In the past few years, I've occasionally written posts about my current favourite songs (about once a year). So, here's what I've been liking lately! :) 

Gen Neo- I Wanna Know

Singaporean singer Gen Neo released his latest EP Push&Pull back in November. To date he has brought out 4 singles from it- Tell The Truth, Like I Do, ONTW and The Test. While I like most of the songs, my favourites are I Wanna Know and Ain't The Same. I bought those two on iTunes around the end of the year.

I'm still listening to these songs now! This is my fave, I Wanna Know. It's a smooth R'n'B song with melancholy vibes, where Gen sings about wanting to know if his ex is better off with her current lover.

Tobii feat. DOLLA- Bad Girls Like You (English version)

Swiss/Thai rapper and R'n'B singer Tobii  released an English version of his hit single Bad Girls Like You in January. The original version is mostly Thai with some English lyrics and was released last September. 

The English version of Bad Girls like You features Malaysian girl group DOLLA. I like both versions and bought the English one on iTunes, with a voucher I got for my birthday this month.

JENNIE, Childish Gambino, Kali Uchis- Damn Right

Next is Damn Right by Korean singer JENNIE, American rapper Childish Gambino (real name Donald Glover) and American/Colombian singer Kali Uchis. It's from JENNIE's debut studio album Ruby, which was released earlier this month.

Note: I normally write some background info about the artists and since this ended up being quite a lot, I've split my text about each artist into sections, to make it easier to read! 

 

JENNIE

JENNIE (full name Kim Jenni/Jennie Kim( is a member of popular K-pop girl group BLACKPINK). She started her career when the group debuted in 2016. In November 2018, she launched her solo career with her debut single Solo, which was a hit in Korea, (her first solo No. 1), as well as internationally. It was released as a single album.

She continued to work with BLACKPINK and it wasn't until several years later that her 2nd solo single You & Me was released. It came out in October 2023 and was also a hit. 

JENNIE branched into acting in 2023, starring in the American TV series The Idol, alongside Canadian singer The Weeknd (who co-created it) and Lily-Rose Depp (daughter of American actor Johnny Depp and French singer, model and actress Vanessa Paradis). All 3 stars released the single One of the Girls from the show, in December 2023. 

Ruby was released on 7th March, through JENNIE's own label Oddatelier. Singles from it include Mantra, like JENNIE and the latest, Handlebars featuring British/Albanian singer Dua Lipa.

 

Childish Gambino/Donald

Donald started out in music (as Childish Gambino) by releasing 4 mix tapes and 3 independent albums, before signing to Glassnote Records. He then brought out his debut studio album Camp on the label, in November 2011. 

To date he has released 5 studio albums his most recent (and the last under Childish Gambino) being Bando Stone & the New World, which came out in July last year. It serves as the soundtrack to his upcoming film of the same name. One of his most successful singles is This Is America, which was released in May 2018 and got to No. 1 on several American charts.

His other singles include 3005, Bed Peace with Jhené Aiko and one of his most recent, Witchy with Haitian Canadian music producer and DJ KAYTRANADA, which came out last October.

Donald is also an actor, having started his entertainment career by playing a regular character in the American comedy TV series Community (which ran from 2009 to 2014). He then went on to create and star in the American comedy drama TV show Atlanta.

In addition, he has appeared in films such as Mystery Team (2009), Spider Man: Homecoming (2017) and voiced Simba in the 2019 remake of The Lion King and its prequel/sequel, Mufasa: The Lion King, which came out in December. 

 

Kali

Kali (real name Karly Marina Loaiza) is half Columbian and half American, and born in the US. She started out in the music business in 2012, when she released her debut mixtape Drunken Babble. She went on to release her debut EP Por Vida ("For Life" in English) as a free download. Her debut album Isolation came out in April 2018.

Since then, Kali has released two more EPs- To Feel Alive (2020) and Sin Miedo (Acoustic) (2021)- and 4 more albums, her most recent being Orquideas, which came out in January 2024. Her 5th album Sincerely is set for release on 9th May.

One of Kali's most successful singles is telepatia (Telepathy) which was released in February 2021 after becoming popular on TikTok. He other singles include I Wish You Roses, Moonlight and Never Be Yours. She just released Sunshine & Rain (on 27th March), the lead single from her upcoming new album.

 

Damn Right is an R'n'B song with a laidback vibe. The 3 singers go well together and I like Childish's/Donald's rap. It's my favourite song on Ruby, which isn't surprising, since R'n'B is one of my fave genres!

BANKS- Stay 

Finally, here is Stay, a song from American singer BANKS' new album, Off With Her Head. It's her 5th studio album and was released on 28th February. 

Off With Her Head was preceded by the singles I Hate Your Ex-Girlfriend featuring American rapper and singer Doechii , Best Friends and Love Is Unkind (released last October, December and January respectively). The latest single is Move featuring French singer Yseult, which came out on 14th March.

As well as Stay, my other fave songs Guillotine, Love Is Unkind and Make It Up featuring British singer Sampha. 

Stay is my favourite track. It's a slow, reflective song and a bit melancholy (I like melancholy songs; also see Gen Neo's I Wanna Know above!).
