Here is another instalment of my Asian Groups series! Today I'm featuring Taiwanese girl group GENBLUE and Thai boyband LKYN. :)
GENBLUE
Girl group GENBLUE are from Taiwan and signed to TEN ENTERTAINMENT (Taiwanese entertainment company). They were formed through the reality TV survival show NEXT GIRLZ (whose other winners include Twinkle Black and Twinkle Black member/solo artist Ally Shen) in 2023.
Their group name is short for "Generation" and "Blue" and is inspired by the blue crystal, symbolising courage. It also reflects GENBLUE's Generation Z spirit and attitude.
The group consists of 6 members- leader XXIN (real name Wang Xin Ming), Ayeon (Lee Ayeon), Yuan (Hsu Yuan Yuan), Lili (Wu Yu Hsuan), Ayako (Wang Tsai Chen) and Nico (Chen Yi Han). Ayeon is Korean, Ayako is Taiwanese and Japanese, and the other girls are Taiwanese. Several of them already had experience in the entertainment industry.*
Pre-debut members Rong Rong (Huang Hsaio Rong) and Vicky (Huang Hsin Ssu) were removed from the group after evaluation in 2024 and Bido also left that year, due to personal reasons.
GENBLUE released their first pre-debut single CHECKMATE in July 2023, followed by 4 others- Trip, Slow Down, ååå(Chinese title, which I think translates as "Oops" in English) and Color Paper. They were all songs that they had performed on NEXT GIRLZ.
In November they brought out the special commemorative album For You, which included the singles. The group also released 3 special singles in 2024- Miss You 1000+, Listen to You. and å°å±¬ēå¤å¤© (Exclusive Summer).
GENBLUE officially debuted in China and South Korea last September, with the digital single COCOCO. I first came across them on the Arirang TV (Korean TV channel) programmes Simply K-pop: Con Tour and SPOTLIGHT Rookies. Their music so far has been K-pop but I'd imagine that they will also release Chinese music in the future.
This month the group released their debut Korean EP, ACT LIKE THAT, along with the title track. Both came out on 6th March.

LYKN
LYKN is a 5-member project boy group from Thailand. They were formed on the reality survival show Project Alpha in 2023 and are signed to Thai music production studio RISER MUSIC and GMMTV RECORDS. The group's name is a homophone of "lycan", which stands for "the ability of a human being to transform into a werewolf anytime".
The members are Nut (real name Thanat Danjesda), Hong (Pichetpong Chiradatesakunvong), Tui (Chayatorn Trairattanapradit), William (Jakrapatr Kaewpanpong) and Lego (Raepeepong Supatineekitdecha).
LYKN made their debut with the digital single MAY I? in May 2023. To date they have released 5 more digital singles during 2023 and 2024- Umm Umm, No Worries, Trust Me, Sugoi and Trick or Treat featuring Thai singer and social meda personality Chrrissa.
They have also brought out the special single Lykyou in 2024, plus two collaboration special singles- HUI LAY HUI with Thai girl group SIZZY (now disbanded) for GMMTV's Starlympic event in 2023 and CHARM with singer/actors and member of fellow Thai boy group Project JASP.ER, Joong and Pond last year.
Plus, they starred in and recorded music for the soundtrack of the Thai drama series ThamePo Heart That Skips a Beat (playing members of an idol group). They haven't released an EP or album yet, but I'll keep an eye out! :)
MAY I?
This is MAY I?, the boys' debut single. It was released digitally in May 2023.
As people have pointed out, the Thai titles of songs aren't necessarily the same as the English ones. I think the Thai title of this one translates as something like "If you break up with him, you'll be lonely with him", which makes sense given the context of the song. It's about wanting a love interest to break up with their boyfriend, so you can be their company and take his place!
English subtitles available! :)
SUGOI
Next up is SUGOI. It's LYKN's 5th single and was released in September last year. This was the first song of theirs that I came across.
SUGOI is more of a hip hop song and has mostly Thai lyrics, along with a bit of English and Japanese! In this case, I think both the Thai and English titles are similar.
In a discussion on this site (linked to in a Reddit thread about the song), people say that the Thai title is an expression that means "Cool, good or amazing", linked to the LBTQ+ community. And according to this lyric video, Sugoi translates as "Amazing" in English.
English subtitles are also available.
LYKYOU
Finally, this is LYKYOU, their most recent single. It was released in December. This one is a slower, ballad style song.
Subtitles are available for this one too! :)
