C-pop Saturday

Time for another C-pop Saturday (my semi-regular series featuring Chinese music)! It's only my second one of the year (the first was in February). Here is a selection of Chinese songs (double videos from a couple of acts!) :)

BOY STORY- Alpha

First up is Alpha by Chinese boy band BOY STORY. It's from their 3rd EP JI which was released in February.

Having started out in the music  industry as boys (literally a "boy band"!), the BOY STORY members are now in their late teens and early 20s (with the youngest aged 17). They officially debuted in China in 2018 and made their Korean debut in August last year, with the English version of the single ZI.P.

Alpha is the title track from JI and was released on 3rd February (the same day as the EP). It's a mixture of Chinese and English lyrics, and is about the contradiction of opposites. There are also English and Korean versions of the song.

Click "Subtitles/closed captions" on YouTube for English subtitles! :)

BOY STORY- Please

And this is Please, one of their most recent singles.  It's also from JI and came out last month.

LAY- SHUFFLE (Sprite Limelight)

This is Shuffle by Chinese rapper/singer LAY  (full name Lay Zhang, who is also a member of Korean/Chinese boy band EXO, although maybe he's currently inactive). It's a new theme song for Sprite Limelight Season 3 (a global music programme that launched in 2022). LAY previously worked with Sprite Limelight in 2023,  releasing the song Alive

I've featured a couple of Sprite collabs on the blog before. Korean singer CHUNG HA teamed up with them in 2020 for the Korean Sprite summer campaign and Taiwanese singer/rapper NICKTHEREAL took part in Sprite Limlight last year, releasing the song Cloud 9.

Shuffle was released in May. It's an English and Chinese song, and the video is a good fit as we move into summer. (Although it's not feeling much like almost summer in the UK currently!)

This music video is from the Mainland China CPOP MV YouTube channel. The lyrics appear on  the screen (no English translation though).

You can also watch the video on the official Sprite channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tMnBJ2VKTI

WayV- New Ride

Next up is a new song from WayV (the Chinese sub-unit of the Korean boy band NCT.  It's called New Ride and is from the group's 5th mini album Give Me That, which came out on 5th June.

New Ride is pop/R'n'B song which is about going for a drive under the moonlight with someone you lovee. I like the relaxed vibe of the song and it's also good for summer! The video was uploaded on 29th May and is listed as a track video.

WayV- Give Me That

And here is Give Me That, the title track from the new EP. This is the Mandarin version (with some English lyrics) and there is a Korean version as well. WayV are currently promoting as a 5, minus WinWin, who didn't take part in the EP/album, due to scheduling conflicts.

The video for Give Me That was uploaded on 10th June.

Elva Suyan- Now You Know

Finally, here is Now You Know by Elva Suyan. She is a Malaysian rapper who signed with Universal Music Malaysia (the record label which Malaysian girl group DOLLA is also signed to) earlier this year.

Elva started out in the music business as a girl group trainee in South Korea and Beijing. She is currently one of Malaysia's few female rappers and is also a singer and dancer. In March she announced that she was going to China to audition for the reality competition The Rap of China 2024.

Now You Know is Elva's latest single. I believe that the Chinese title is Ni Bu Zhi Dao Ba in pinyin. It was released on 7th June and the video premiered on the 12th.

25th Anniversary of Mariah Carey's Butterfly Album

My favourite singer Mariah Carey recently released a 25th anniversary edition of her 6th studio album Butterfly. The original album was released on 16th September 1997 and featured songs such as her hit single Honey, The Roof and My All. It was actually the first album I ever bought (on cassette tape, lol) and I still consider it one of my fave MC albums. :) Butterfly was the first album that Mariah had more control over and it is R'n'B, rather than the pop (and later pop/R'n'B) of her previous releases. It also has pop and hip hop influences. The expanded edition contain 8 extra tracks (the original standard edition has 12)- a duet version of Whenever You Call with Brian McKnight , a new take on The Roof featuring Brandy , live versions of Butterfly and My All, acapella versions of Fourth of July and Outside, an Amorphous Anniversary Club Mix of Butterfly (with DJ Amorphous ) and a remix of Honey (Another Taste of Honey David Morales Mix). I had previously heard the D

New Unexpected

We're finally getting the new season of the reality TV series Unexpected in the UK! Season 3 was shown in the US last summer , and I wondered when we'd get it here. I don't have any online streaming services so thought I'd just watch clips on YouTube, lol. However it's now starting here in early March. Similar to the popular MTV franchise Teen Mom , Unexpected focuses on teen parents. The first series featured 3 couples expecting babies- Lily Bennett and her boyfriend James Kennedy who have daughter Aaliyah, now 2;  Mckayla Adkins and partner Caelan Morrison who have son Timothy, also known as Timmy (and now daughter Gracelynn , born in January 2019), and  Lexus Scheller and boyfriend Shayden Massey who have daughter Scarlett. Season 2 saw the departure of Lilly and the addition of 3 new pregnant girls and their partners- Laura Barron and her boyfriend (now husband) Tylor Stawmyor who have son Lucas (and have since had another baby , a 2nd son, who is named Leo),
