Christmas Songs for 2023

Christmas is just over a week away, so today I'm sharing some festive music! :) I've previously written two other posts/round-ups featuring Christmas songs, which you can see at the links below:

For 2023 I'm sharing some new festive songs. :)

Brandy- Christmas Party for Two

American singer Brandy (full name Brandy Norwood) released her first Christmas album (and 8th studio album overall) Christmas with Brandy on 10th November. It contains 12 tracks- 6 classic Christmas songs, plus 6 original ones. Brandy is also co-starring in the new Netflix film Best. Christmas. Ever!, alongside Heather Graham, Matt Cedeño and Jason Biggs

Christmas Party for Two is a smooth R'n'B love song with chilled vibes. It's the lead single from Christmas with Brandy and came out on 3rd November. Brandy uploaded a lyric video on the same day and the music video premiered on 5th December. She collaborated with Stella Rosa Brandy for the video!

Coco Jones- A Timeless Christmas

American singer Coco Jones also brought out a Christmas song in November. It's called A Timeless Christmas and is a chilled R'n'B track, great for relaxing to during the festive season.

This isn't the first time Coco has made Christmas music, having previously released several songs, including the original song Home for the Holidays in 2020 and a cover of the classic song Silver Bells last December.

A Timeless Christmas was released on 22nd November. This is the official lyric video.

Matthew Ifield- Holly Jolly Christmas

Next up is a classic Christmas song! This is Holly Jolly Christmas by Matthew Ifield. He's an Australian singer who found fame on TikTok.

A Holly Jolly Christmas/Have a Holly Jolly Christmas was written in 1962 by American songwriter Johnny Marks and was the title song of 60s group The Quinto Sisters' debut album back in 1964. One of its most famous versions was by American folk singer and actor Burl Ives, which was released as a single in 1964 and featured in the 1964 Christmas TV special Rudoph the Red Nosed Reindeer, in which Burt was the narrator, Frosty the Snowman. The following year it appeared on his album Have a Holly Jolly Christmas.

There have been many versions of the song recorded and performed since, one of the most popular in modern times being Canadian singer Michael Bublé's A Holly Jolly Christmas. It was a single from his first Christmas album Christmas, released in October 2011.

Matthew's version is from his new seasonal album A Christmas Album, which came out on 10th November. It features more classic Christmas songs, including It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas, White Christmas and Let It Snow!

I came across  the music video randomly on YouTube recently! It was uploaded on 30th November. I like Matthew's mellow version of the song. As someone pointed out, he sounds older than 19! Very mature voice. :)

The video has a different feel to a lot of Christmas ones because the weather looks warm (presumably it was filmed in Australia). Although I spent my early years abroad, the majority of my Christmases have been in the UK, so I'm used to cold weather at this time, lol.

Ally Brooke and Dinah Jane- Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

Former Fifth Harmony members Ally Brooke and Dinah Jane have teamed up for a new version of the classic Christmas song Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, which was written in 1943 for the 1944 musical film Meet Me in St. Louis and originally sung by Judy Garland

Ally and Dinah's version is from Ally's new Christmas EP Under The Tree, which came out on 3rd November. I like the girls' R'n'B take on the song. I think it's one of the best versions I've heard! :) (Brandy's one is quite good too though.) The single came out on 1st December.

25th Anniversary of Mariah Carey's Butterfly Album

My favourite singer Mariah Carey recently released a 25th anniversary edition of her 6th studio album Butterfly. The original album was released on 16th September 1997 and featured songs such as her hit single Honey, The Roof and My All. It was actually the first album I ever bought (on cassette tape, lol) and I still consider it one of my fave MC albums. :) Butterfly was the first album that Mariah had more control over and it is R'n'B, rather than the pop (and later pop/R'n'B) of her previous releases. It also has pop and hip hop influences.  The expanded edition contain 8 extra tracks (the original standard edition has 12)- a duet version of Whenever You Call with Brian McKnight , a new take on The Roof featuring Brandy , live versions of Butterfly and My All, acapella versions of Fourth of July and Outside, an Amorphous Anniversary Club Mix of Butterfly (with DJ Amorphous ) and a remix of Honey (Another Taste of Honey David Morales Mix). I had previously heard the

Debut XG Mini Album

Japanese girl group XG have released their 1st mini album. It's called NEW DNA and was released on 27th September. XG (whose name is short for Xtraordinary Girls) made their debut in March last year and have brought out 7 singles so far- Tippy Toes, MASCARA, LEFT RIGHT/SHOOTING STAR double single), GVRL GANG , TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. The first 3 songs (or 4 including the double single) aren't on the mini album. The concept behind NEW DNA is that of being a "new species" free from conventions and limitations .  Although the group is Japanese, their creation was inspired by Korean music and they are based in South Korea. They have released songs in English so far and have been described as a global group and "X-pop". NEW DNA consists of 6 tracks- HESONO, X-GENE, GVRL GANG, TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. It is an R'n'B/pop mini album with influences from other genres, such as K-pop, dance and hip hop. My favourite song is PUPPET SHOW. I al
