Filipina R'n'B singer Denise Julia (real name Julia Denise Lee) recently released her debut mini album. It's called Sweet Nothings (Chapter 1) and came out on 17th November.
I first came across Denise around a year ago and liked her song superficial energy (written in lower case). After listening to more of her music on Spotify, one of my favourite songs was Pity Ya. And then this summer I really liked her single bum 2 me, so I was looking forward to the release of her first mini album. :)
Sweet Nothings contains 7 tracks (all English language), including the singles bum 2 me, butterflies and B.A.D. featuring P-Lo. It's R'n'B style (some songs have a 00s vibe!) with some jazz and hip hop influences, and Denise says that the album is "like a journey through all the different parts of love". I like the mini album. I think if you also like R'n'B (and are maybe feeling nostalgic for music from the late 90s/early 00s, you'll enjoy it too! Here are the singles released so far, plus my favourite songs. :)
butterflies
This was the first single from Sweet Nothings and was released in February. There is another version on the mini album as well called butterflies (2 a.m. version). I like both of them but the 2 a.m. version slightly more. I think it's more "stripped back" and it gives it a different vibe. I especially like the part towards the end, where the music and instruments kick in.

bum 2 me feat. Jason Dhakal
The original bum 2 me was one of my favourite songs this year! It came out in April but I only discovered it in the summer. I didn't have a computer at the time and wasn't able to fully use iTunes on my phone, so I just listened to it on YouTube a lot, lol. When I got a new computer I bought the song.
bum 2 me is about the end of a relationship and how the former
lover is now just a "bum". The version of the album features fellow Filipino R'n'B singer Jason Dhakal. Jason sings the second verse. While the original remains my fave, I like this one as well. :)
This is the official audio. Please note that it contains swearing. :)

B.A.D. feat P-Lo
B.A.D featuring Filipino American rapper P-Lo and was released in October. It's a laidback song with some sexy lyrics! It was a Weekly Music Video last month: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2023/11/weekly-music-video.html
Lackin'
Lackin' is Denise's latest single (at least I think it's a single). It has a nice chilled vibe and as someone said in the comments, is reminiscent of older R'n'B music.
This is the official music video, which premiered on 16th November, featuring the theme of getting revenge on a man who's hurt you! I like that Denise mentions manifesting in the song, lol.
Roster feat. HILLARI
And this is Roster, my 2nd favourite song on the mini album. Denise teamed up with Norwegian-Filipina singer HILLARI for this track. I like the whole vibe of this song and their voices blend well together. I hadn't heard of HILLARI before this but plan to check out more of her music. :)
This is an audio.
I've mentioned nearly all the songs except for Sugar n' Spice, which sounds kind of similar to B.A.D. You can listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNvrG16HIVY

Note: I've been having an issue while using the Spotify desktop app, where only 6 songs are available sometimes and the original butterflies is missing. But all the songs are there when I view it online. The other day it was also playing the wrong bum 2 me but that seems to be ok now. Not sure what's going on with it!
What do you think of the mini album? What are your fave songs? :)
