Fifth Harmony Girls' Solo Careers- Part 1

Sorry the 2nd post is later this week, I didn't manage to get it finished in time. :) I've actually had this post in mind for a while now but just getting round to it!

Fifth Harmony (also known as 5H) is an American girl group, consisting of 5 contestants from the 2nd season (or series) of the of The X Factor USA. The members- Camila Cabello, Normani Kordei, Lauren Jaregui, Ally Brooke and Dinah Jane- all auditioned solo for the reality show. Not all the girls got through to the next stage but they were brought back as a group to enter the Groups category. They came 3rd place in the contest in December 2012 (behind runner up Carly Rose Sonenclar and winner Tate Stevens).

The group signed a record deal with Syco (the record label of The X Factor creator Simon Cowell; now defunct) and Epic Records, and released their debut single Miss Movin On in July 2013. Their debut EP Better Together followed in October that year. In January 2015 they brought out their first studio album Reflection.

Fifth Harmony were active for 5 years, going on indefinite hiatus in 2018. During that time they released 3 albums- Reflection (2015), 7/27 (2016), 6 EPs- Better Together (2013), Junto (2013), acoustic and remix versions of the first two and a Spotify singles EP, and 12 official singles (as well as promotional songs). Their singles include Miss Movin' On, Boss, Worth It featuring Kid Ink, Work From Home featuring Ty Dolla $ign, All In My Head (Flex) with Fetty Wap, He like That and Por Favor featuring Pitbull.

They had ups and downs over the years. Camila left the band in December 2018 and the remaining girls continued as a foursome. It later came out that she had made racist posts in the past, called her bandmates the "N-word" and not supported fellow member Normani when she was going through racist online abuse.

Note: I'm including Camila here as part of the group but I'd just like to state that I don't condone what she did. She has since apologised and hopefully it's genuine.

In March 2018 Fifth Harmony announced that they were going on an indefinite hiatus. Their final single was Don't Say You Love Me, released in May. All the members have since released solo music, so I'm taking a look at their careers today. :) I decided to split it into two parts because the post ended getting really long! So I'm featuring Camila, Normani and Lauren in Part 1.

Camila

Camila Cabello (full name Karla Camila Cabello Estrabao) left the group in December 2016. She had previously collaborated with Canadian singer Shawn Mendes (who she later went on to date) on the song I Know What You Did Last Summer in 2015, which was her first single as a solo artist. She also brought out the singles Bad Things with Machine Gun Kelly in October 2016 and Love Incredible with Cashmere Cat in February 2017.

In May 2017, Camilla released Crying in the Club, which I believe is considered her debut solo single (without other artists). It was originally intended to be on Camila's debut album but wasn't included in the end. The song did well, reaching Platinum status in several countries, including the US, the UK and Australia.

Three months later she released Havana featuring Young Thug, which was her breakthrough single as a solo singer, becoming a chart hit in 23 countries. It became the lead single on her debut studio album Camila (replacing Crying in the Club), which followed in January 2018.

To date, Camila has released two more studio albums- Romance (2019) and Familia (2022), the EP New Daily presents: Camila Cabello (2019) and the soundtrack album for the 2021 Amazon original movie musical Cinderella, in which she played the title character. Her other singles include Senorita (with her then boyfriend Shawn Mendes), Liar, Cry for Me, Don't Go Yet, Bam Bam with British singer Ed Shereran and Ku Lo Sa with Nigerian singer Oxlade

Her most recent single is It Takes Two, a song from the soundtrack of the new animated film Trolls Band Together, which she also voices the character Viva in. It's a collab with Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Eric André, Daveed Diggs and Kid Cudi.

Havana

This is Havana, Camila's hit single, which was released in August 2017, along with the single OMG. Both were promotional singles from her debut album. However, due to Havana's popularity, it became the lead single from her album, replacing Crying in the Club (see above).

Havana is a Latin pop song (with R'n'B influences) about romance. Camila was born in Cuba and the song title refers to the captial city of the country. The original version features American rapper Young Thug and there is also a remix with Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee.

The music video is inspired by films and Latin American telenovelas

Beautiful (with Bazzi)

Camila featured on the remix of American singer Bazzi's single Beautiful, back in August 2018. Watch the video here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2018/08/weekly-music-video_29.html

Hasta Los Dientes (with Maria Becerra)

In May last year Camila released the Spanish language song Haste Los Dientes, with Argentinian singer and former YouTuber María Becerra. It was the 4th single from Camila's 3rd album Familia and has been described as a nu-disco song. The title translates as something like "To the teeth" in English.

Normani

Normani Kordei (full name Normani Kordei Hamilton) released solo covers before launching her official solo career in February 2018 when she featured on Khalid's Love Lies. In October that year she released the EP, Normani x Calvin Harris, a collaboration with British DJ Calvin Harris.

She has also worked with other artists including 6LACK on the single Waves, the remix of Canadian singer Jessie Reyez's single Body Count (along with American singer Kehlani) in 2018, and Dancing With a Stranger with British singer Sam Smith and Bad To You with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj (from the 2019 Charlie's Angels movie) in 2019.

Normani's most successful single to date is Motivation, released in summer 2019, which reached the Top 10 in music charts in several countries, including the US and the UK. Since then she has brought out 4 more singles- Diamonds with rapper Megan Thee Stallion, Wild Side featuring rapper Cardi B, Fair and her most recent, New To You with Calvin Harris, Tinashe and Offset.

Normani also featured on the remix for American singer and childhood friend Josh Levi's single Don't They in June 2022. She hasn't released a solo album yet but hopefully will in future. She has spoken about having a difficult time during her years in Fifth Harmony, so it's nice to see her going for her solo dreams. :)

Love Lies (with Khalid)

In February 2018, Normani featured on the single Love Lies by American singer Khalid, from the soundtrack of the film Love, Simon. It was a Weekly Music Video in April 2018: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2018/04/weekly-music-video_18.html

Waves feat. 6LACK

Normani released the single Waves (her first as a lead artist) in November 2018, teaming up with American singer and rapper 6LACK. (Although the original version didn't feature him.) The music video came out the following Februry and won Best R'n'B Video at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards.

Waves is my favourite Normani song; I like the whole vibe of it. :) Watch the video here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2019/02/weekly-music-video_20.html

Motivation

Motivation was Normani's biggest hit as a solo artist to date. She co-wrote it, along with Ariana Grande and several others. The song was released in August 2019 and did well around the world.

Bad To You with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj

In October 2019, Normani teamed up with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj for Bad To You, from the soundtrack of the 2019 Charlie's Angels film: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2019/11/weekly-music-video.html

Wild Side feat. Cardi B

Wild Side, which samples the late Aaliyah's song One In a Million was released in July 2021. Cardi B raps on the track. I featured it in a post in summer 2021, (along with a Mabel song):  https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2021/07/new-mabel-and-normani-videos.html

Also see my More Samples and Covers post from this summer to hear both songs: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2023/06/more-samples-and-covers.html

Fair

Fair was released in March 2022 and was the 2nd single from Normani's upcoming debut album. There's no update on the album's release yet though. There was no music video, just an audio. Listen here:  https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2023/04/weekly-music-video_19.html

New To You with Calvin Harris, Tinashe and Offset

In July last year Normani featured on Calvin Harris' single New To You, along with American singer Tinashe and American rapper Offset. She had previously worked with Calvin on their 2018 Ep Normani x Calvin Harris.

New To You is disco song with R'n'B influences and was the 4th single  from Calvin's 6th album Funk Waves Bounce Vol. 2 (released in August 2022). It gives me Saturday Night Fever vibes!

Lauren

Lauren Jauregui (full name Lauren Michelle Jauregui Morgado) released music with several other artists while still in the band, including In Your Phone with Ty Dolla $ign (her then-boyfriend), who also worked with Fifth Harmony on Work From Home and the EDM single All Night with American DJ Steve Aoki in November 2017. The following October she brought out her debut solo single Expectations.

Lauren's next release was the single More Than That, in January 2019. And in November 2021 she released her debut EP Prelude. To date she has brought out 7 more singles, including Lento with Puerto Rican record producer and songwriter Tainy (which also has a remix), 50ft and On Guard featuring 6LACK (who also worked with Normani; see above).

In May this year Lauren released her second EP In Between. Her latest single is Trust Issues, which came out in March.

All Night (with Steve Aoki)

This is All Night, Lauren's first single as a lead artist (along with DJ Steve Aoki), which was released through Ultra Records. She provided the vocals and co-wrote the song. It's a different style to Fifth Harmony, being a dance track.

All Night came out in November 2017 and the video was released in January 2018. I don't think I'd seen it before doing this post. I haven't seen a lot of the Fifth Harmony members' solo music on music channels in the UK, apart from Normani's and Camila's. With the others I've mostly seen their videos on YouTube.

More Than That

More Than That was Lauren's 3rd solo single overall (her 2nd without any other artists), released in January 2019. It was written a couple of years before release and was inspired the Greek Goddess Aphrodite.  The song is R'n'B with some trap influences.

The music video is a celebration of women, set in an all-female nightclub.

Wolves

And this is Wolves, one of Lauen's most recent songs. I'm not sure if it was an official single but it's from her sophomore EP In Between. The EP was released in May through her own label Attunement Records.

Wolves features Ty Dolla $ign and Russ. This is the official lyric video.

25th Anniversary of Mariah Carey's Butterfly Album

My favourite singer Mariah Carey recently released a 25th anniversary edition of her 6th studio album Butterfly. The original album was released on 16th September 1997 and featured songs such as her hit single Honey, The Roof and My All. It was actually the first album I ever bought (on cassette tape, lol) and I still consider it one of my fave MC albums. :) Butterfly was the first album that Mariah had more control over and it is R'n'B, rather than the pop (and later pop/R'n'B) of her previous releases. It also has pop and hip hop influences.  The expanded edition contain 8 extra tracks (the original standard edition has 12)- a duet version of Whenever You Call with Brian McKnight , a new take on The Roof featuring Brandy , live versions of Butterfly and My All, acapella versions of Fourth of July and Outside, an Amorphous Anniversary Club Mix of Butterfly (with DJ Amorphous ) and a remix of Honey (Another Taste of Honey David Morales Mix). I had previously heard the

Watch the video with the original mix here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZM52M6cfSA Baila Conmigo (J.Lo version) came out on 10th October. Debut XG Mini Album

Japanese girl group XG have released their 1st mini album. It's called NEW DNA and was released on 27th September. XG (whose name is short for Xtraordinary Girls) made their debut in March last year and have brought out 7 singles so far- Tippy Toes, MASCARA, LEFT RIGHT/SHOOTING STAR double single), GVRL GANG , TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. The first 3 songs (or 4 including the double single) aren't on the mini album. The concept behind NEW DNA is that of being a "new species" free from conventions and limitations .  Although the group is Japanese, their creation was inspired by Korean music and they are based in South Korea. They have released songs in English so far and have been described as a global group and "X-pop". NEW DNA consists of 6 tracks- HESONO, X-GENE, GVRL GANG, TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. It is an R'n'B/pop mini album with influences from other genres, such as K-pop, dance and hip hop. My favourite song is PUPPET SHOW. I al
