Fifth Harmony Girls' Solo Careers- Part 2

Last week I wrote a post about the solo careers of the members of American girl group Fifth Harmony. I intended to write one post but ended up splitting it into two parts because it was long. You can read Part 1 here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2023/11/fifth-harmony-girls-solo-careers-part-1.html

The first post features Camila Cabello, Normani Kordei and Lauren Jauregui. And now for Part 2, I'm sharing music from the other 2 members, Dinah Jane and Ally Brooke.

Ally Brooke

Ally Brooke (full name Alyson Brooke Hernandez) took the first steps in her solo career with the release of the single Look at Us Now (a collaboration with American DJs Lost Kings and rapper ASAP Ferg) in June 2017. The following January she released her first single as lead artist, Perfect with Croation-German DJ Topic, which was well received.

In November 2018 Ally teamed up with Dutch DJ trio Kriss Kross Amsterdam and Dominican rapper Messiah for the single Vámonos ("Let's Go" in English), a Spanish language Latin pop song. Ally is Mexican American and has said that while she didn't speak Spanish growing up (due to her parents having bad experiences at school), she's proud of being Latin American and was happy to be releasing a song in Spanish. She has gone on to make more Spanish music (see below).

Ally released her official debut solo single Low Key featuring American rapper Tyga, in January 2019 (her first on Atlantic Records). It was followed by several other singles that year, Lips Don't Lie featuring American rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie , No Good and Higher with Norwegian DJ and producer Matoma

In 2021 Ally signed a  joint record deal with Duars Entertainment and AMSI to release a Spanish album. The title single from the album was Mi Música (My Music) which came out in October 2021.

To date she has released 18 singles in all (plus several promotional singles and ones where she is a featured artist), including Fabulous, What Are We Waiting For and Gatekeep with Dutch DJ and music producers Afrojack and Fedde Le Grand respectively, 500 Veces with Messiah (a Spanglish aka mix of Spanish and English song), the Christmas song Baby I'm Coming Home (all released in 2020), Por Ti (For You) and Tequila in 2022 and her latest, Gone To Bed.

Ally mentioned in a recent interview that she hopes to bring out her solo album next year. I don't think there are any further updates as yet, but she just released her debut Christmas EP Under The Tree on 3rd November.

Low Key

This is Low Key, Ally's debut solo single, which came out in January 2019. At the time it was going to be the lead single from her debut album. It's a dance-pop song and features rapper Tya, although there is also a version without the rap.

Tequila

Tequila is a Spanish language song that was released in April 2022, the 3rd single from Ally' upcoming album. It's about self-love, the importance of reconnecting with yourself and going after your dreams, even when others don't support you. The lyrics are about going through a relationship break-up and becoming stronger in the end.

This was a special song for Ally because it gave her the chance to reconnect with her Mexican roots and inspire Latina women.

Gone To Bed

And this is Gone To Bed, her latest single. It was released on 30th September. This is the official lyric video.

 Dinah Jane

Dinah Jane (full name Dinah Jane Milika Ilaisaane Hansen) brought out her first song Dancing Like a White Girl back in 2011, before joining Fifth Harmony the following year. She pursued several solo projects alongside the band, including featuring on the 2017 single Boom Boom with Moroccan singer RedOne , Moroccan rapper French Montana and Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee, and releasing a Christmas medley with British singer Leona Lewis (who won the 3rd series of the UK X Factor) the same year.

In summer 2018, Dinah signed a record deal with Hitco Entertainment and released her debut solo single Bottled Up featuring Ty Dolla $ign (who has also worked with Fifth Harmony and bandmember Lauren Jauregui; see Part 1) and Marc E. Bassey that September. Her next release was Heard It All Before, which served as the lead single from her debut EP Dinah Jane 1. Both single and EP came out in April 2019.

Since then she has released 5 more singles- Retrograde, SZNS featuring A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie (who also has a song with Ally; see above), Missed a Spot and her most recent, Ya Ya and Falling In Love with Samoan Australian singer JKING. She also brought out the promotional singles Lottery and 1501 in 2020.

Bottled Up feat. Ty Dolla $ign and Marc E. Bassey

Here is Bottled Up. It was Dinah's debt solo single (released in September 2018) and features American singers Ty Dolla $ign and Marc E. Bassey. The R'n'B song was co-written by Dinah, Ty Dolla $ign and Marc, as well  as Peruvian American singer A.CHAL

Heard It All Before

Heard It All Before was Dinah's second single overall and the first to be released from her debut EP Dinah Jane. It came out in April 2019, on the same day as the EP.

I really like this; it gives me 00s R'n'B vibes! Contrary to the title, I don't think I'd heard it before today, lol.

Ya Ya

And this is Ya Ya, one of her most recent singles. It was Dinah's first single in 3 years and was released in August.

Dinah has Tongan, Samoan, Fijian and Danish heritage, and she has said that with Ya Ya she is connecting with her Polynesian ancestry and people. I think it's nice to see Polynesian representation. Also, I lived in Fiji for a bit as a child, so it's cool to see someone in the public eye with Fijian heritage as well (and mixed race people too). :)

This is the official visualiser. The bra Dinah wears in the video was custom made by a Tahitian dance troupe for cultural performances. I mentioned years ago that I'd like to do Hawaiian or Tahitian dance, but I haven't had a chance to try it in person as yet!

Hope you liked the post! :) I'm glad I managed to get Part 2 done the next week, lol. Do you have a favourite of 5H's solo releases? I like Normani's music the most but they all have some good songs. :)

25th Anniversary of Mariah Carey's Butterfly Album

My favourite singer Mariah Carey recently released a 25th anniversary edition of her 6th studio album Butterfly. The original album was released on 16th September 1997 and featured songs such as her hit single Honey, The Roof and My All. It was actually the first album I ever bought (on cassette tape, lol) and I still consider it one of my fave MC albums. :) Butterfly was the first album that Mariah had more control over and it is R'n'B, rather than the pop (and later pop/R'n'B) of her previous releases. It also has pop and hip hop influences.  The expanded edition contain 8 extra tracks (the original standard edition has 12)- a duet version of Whenever You Call with Brian McKnight , a new take on The Roof featuring Brandy , live versions of Butterfly and My All, acapella versions of Fourth of July and Outside, an Amorphous Anniversary Club Mix of Butterfly (with DJ Amorphous ) and a remix of Honey (Another Taste of Honey David Morales Mix). I had previously heard the

Watch the video with the original mix here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZM52M6cfSA Baila Conmigo (J.Lo version) came out on 10th October. Debut XG Mini Album

Japanese girl group XG have released their 1st mini album. It's called NEW DNA and was released on 27th September. XG (whose name is short for Xtraordinary Girls) made their debut in March last year and have brought out 7 singles so far- Tippy Toes, MASCARA, LEFT RIGHT/SHOOTING STAR double single), GVRL GANG , TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. The first 3 songs (or 4 including the double single) aren't on the mini album. The concept behind NEW DNA is that of being a "new species" free from conventions and limitations .  Although the group is Japanese, their creation was inspired by Korean music and they are based in South Korea. They have released songs in English so far and have been described as a global group and "X-pop". NEW DNA consists of 6 tracks- HESONO, X-GENE, GVRL GANG, TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. It is an R'n'B/pop mini album with influences from other genres, such as K-pop, dance and hip hop. My favourite song is PUPPET SHOW. I al
