With recent events and a lot of division and unrest in the world, I think we could all do with some relaxation! Several years ago I did a post on my other blog Falling Petals called Alternatives to Meditation and included some relaxing songs I liked, but I don't think I've ever done a post grouping them all together on Star Sparkle. So today I'm sharing some "chillout" songs.
Years ago I made a playlist of relaxing songs for myself, so I'll share some of those, plus some newer music. Maybe not all of these are strictly in the chillout genre, but they do have calming vibes. Hope it helps you to relax, even if only for a little while. :)
Ivo Sedlacek- Dance of Autumn Lights
I don't listen to much classical music, but one of my favourite pieces in that genre is Dance of Autumn Lights by Ivo Sedlack. It's long at around 16 minutes but great if you just want to relax for a while, or maybe use it for meditation! I featured it as a Weekly Music Video back in 2012: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2012/02/weekly-music-video_22.html
Prasad Bhandarkar- Raga Shivanjani
I discovered this piece of music years ago and really liked it. It's called Raga Shivranjani and is played on a Bansuri (Indian bamboo flute) by the Indian musician Prasad Bhandarkar. It was a Weekly Music Video in 2013: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2013/02/weekly-music-video_13.html
Mila J- Kickin' Back
This is an R'n'B song but I just love the vibe of it. Kickin' Back is by American singer and rapper Mila J and was released in 2016. It's also a great summer song! Watch the video here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2016/07/weekly-music-video_13.html
For music from Mila J's sister Jhené Aiko see below. :)
Nitin Sawhney and Natacha Atlas- Hope
This is one of the songs on my Chillout CD. (I don't listen to CDs as much these days but still like them! lol). It's a collaboration between British Indian producer, composer and musician Nitin Sawhney and Belgian/Egyptian British singer Natacha Atlas.
Both Nitin and Natacha blend different styles of music together. Natacha's music is a mixture of Arabic and Western and I first came across it through belly dancing. I did actually see her perform at a belly dance event in Brighton years ago, but it was crowded and I didn't get a good view!
I first heard Hope on the 1998 compilation album Flying Carpet, but I think it was originally on his 1995 album Migration. The song can also be found on the compilation album Rasa Mello by Donna D'Cruz (2012).
Natacha sings in Arabic. I can't find an English translation online, so please let me know if you speak Arabic and can translate! :) I can understand the odd words but that's it, lol.

Justin Adams- Desert Road
Next up is Desert Road by British guitarist and composer Justin Adams, another one on my Chillout playlist. I first heard this song on the album Putamayo Presents...Sahara Lounge (2004). Although it has a calming vibe, I also find it uplifting.

Prem Joshua & Manish Vyas- Water Down The Ganges
(Adding this because I forgot to include it!).
Water Down The Ganges is a collaboration between German Indian musician Prem Joshua (he was born in Germany and later moved to India) and Indian composer and performer Manish Vyas. I first heard it on the 2004 compliation album Putamayo Presents...Asian Lounge.
The song is quite long at over 11 minutes, but perfect for just "drifting off" to!

Jhené Aiko- Magic Hour
Finally here is Magic Hour, a new song by American singer Jhené Aiko (sister of Mila J; featured above). It was uploaded in May and I think it will be on the deluxe version of her 3rd album Chilombo (Chilombo is her surname). Beautiful music, words and video. :)
Jhené's music is great for chilled vibes! Check out some more of her songs below:

Update 12/6/20: I also wanted to link this post about Alina Baraz's debut album It Was Divine, since it has a chilled, dreamy vibe: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2020/04/alina-baraz-debut-album.html
Hope you enjoyed the post! :) It's a hard time right now, especially for those of us with black heritage. Hope you're taking care of yourselves as best as you can. 💕 I won't be addressing current events much on here since it's an entertainment blog, but I have a mid-year update planned on my self help/spiritual blog Falling Petals, so you can visit that if you like: https://fallingpetalsuk.blogspot.com/
Hope you're coping ok. :)
