C-pop Saturday

Time for the first C-pop Saturday post of the year! If you're new to the blog, it's my semi-regular series sharing Chinese music that I started back in 2018. My last post was in September, so it's been a while!

WayV- FREQUENCY

In December I shared the music videos for both the Korean and Chinese versions of FREQUENCY, the latest single by WayV, in my New Music Releases post. They are the Chinese sub-unit of Korean boyband NCT and sing in Chinese (Mandarin) and Korean.

FREQUENCY is the title track from the group's 6th mini album, which was released last November. Watch the videos here (scroll down): https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2024/12/new-music-releases.html

Ozone- Looking at the Crescent Moon/New Moon Dance Performance Video

In my latest Asian Groups post, I featured the Taiwanese boyband Ozone (as well as Thai girl group 4EVE). One of the songs I shared is New Moon (or the Chinese title which is something like Looking at the Crescent Moon Together, which was released last September. It's the title track from their debut album.

You can watch the music video here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2025/01/asian-groups-thai-girl-group-chinese.html

I also thought I'd share the dance performance video for New Moon.  It was uploaded in September as well.

The 8 feat. JinJiBeWater- Orbit

Next up is Orbit by Chinese singer The 8 and featuring JinJiBeWater. The 8 (sometimes written as The8) is also a dancer, and a member of both Korean boyband SEVENTEEN and its performance sub-unit. His real name is Xu Minghao (or Minghao Xu in Western terms).

The 8 started out by appearing on Chinese TV programmes and taking part in a dance competition in Shanghai, before becoming a member of SEVENTEEN. The group debuted in 2015.

The 8 made his official solo debut with the single Night and Rain in 2018. Since he has released 7 more singles, including Falling Down, Mom's Missed Call with fellow Chinese bandmate Jun, Hai Cheng, A Bite of Summer and his latest, The Orbit. He brought out his debut EP Stardust on 4th December last year.

In addition to singing, The8 has appeared on reality TV, including being a dance coach alongside popular Taiwanese solo singer Jolin Tsai, on the Chinese music survival show Youth With You (also known as Idol Producer) in 2019. (The winners of Youth With You became the boyband UNINE.)

Orbit (which features rapper JinJiBeWater) is the first single from Stardust and was also released on 4th December. It's sung in English and Chinese, and is quite a sexy song! lol. Click "Subtitles/closed captions" on YouTube for English subtitles. :)

Vinida Weng feat. Joeboy- Dia Dia

Now for some fusion music! This is Dia Dia by Chinese rapper Vinida Weng and featuring Nigerian singer Joeboy. The two artists have collaborated for a song that is a mixture of Chinese pop and Afrobeats.

Vinida has previously experimented with African fusion music, having released the Afrobeats inspired EP One Life Only in 2022 and WAIYA! which had influences from the South African music genre amapiano, in 2023.

Dia Dia is described as an infusion of English, Pidgin and Mandarin on a heavy Afrobeat production". Cool mix! :) It was released on 6th December. The lyrics are on screen in the video.

I've written several Bollywood posts this year but I don't feature South Indian music/films as much. I previously featured a dance cover of Oo Antava Mawa in a Dance Videos post in August last year. That one is by Rang De and you can see it here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2023/08/dance-videos.html This cover is by Indian choreographer Sonali Bhaduria, from LiveToDance with Sonali and was uploaded in January 2022. Weekly Music Video

Sorry there wasn't a 2nd post last week, I was going through a bit of a stressful time and didn't manage to get one finished. :) This week's video is I CONDEMN by Australian singer and rapper The Kid LAROI . It was the first single from the deluxe version of his second album BEFORE I FORGET. The original album was released in January and the deluxe version came out on 24th April. It contains 9 extra tracks, including  I CONDEMN and latest single PIECES. I wasn't aware that there was a deluxe version until I saw that some new songs had appeared on Spotify! I like BEFORE I FORGET and my favourite songs from the original version are ME + YOU, JULY,  COME DOWN and RATHER BE featuring Australian rapper and singer Lithe . One of my fave songs on the deluxe version is QUIT YOU, and I also like HOLD STILL and I CONDEMN. The newest single PIECES came out on out the same day as the album. I CONDEMN was released on 17th April. As with the songs on the original BEFORE I FORGET, it...

K-pop Comebacks- BTS

Sorry the 2nd post is later again this week, I didn't manage to get it finished yesterday. :) Last month I started a mini series called K-pop Comebacks, featuring the comebacks of K-pop groups during 2026. The first one was about BLACKPINK and you can see it here:  https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2026/03/k-pop-comebacks-blackpink.html Today I'm focusing on BTS (one of the most popular Korean boybands ). They debuted in 2013 and are a 7-member group, made up of leader RM, formerly known as Rap Monster (real name Kim Nam Joon), SUGA (Min Yoon Gi), Jin (full name Kim Seok Jin), j-hope (Jung Ho-seok), Jimin (Park Ji Min), V (Kim Tae Hyung) and Jungkook (Jeon Jung Kook). * Since then, the boys have been very successful, not only in South Korea but internationally. They are probably one of the most well-known K-pop bands worldwide.  In June 2022, the group took a break while the members served their  mandatory military service in Korea and have also been concentrat...
