This week's video is SMH by Joeboy and Tempoe. Joeboy (real name Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa-Donus) is a Nigerian singer, who started working on music aged 18.
His career took off he after uploaded a cover of British singer Ed Sheeran's Shape of You to Instagram, which drew the attention of Nigerian singer Mr Eazi. He then became an emPawa 100 finalist (part of Mr Eazi's talent incubation initiative programme emPawa Africa, which was officially launched in 2019) the following year.
In March 2019, Joeboy released the single Baby. It is one of his most successful singles to date, reaching the Top 10 in the Nigerian, Kenyan and Ugandan Apple Music Charts and over 20 million streams on YouTube and Spotify.
His follow-up track Beginning (released in August 2019) was also No. 1 on Apple Music in Nigeria and Uganda. He brought out his debut EP Love & Light in November 2019.
Joeboy released his debut studio album Somewhere Between Beauty & Magic in February 2021. He has also released another EP, Body, Soul & Spirit and another album, Body & Soul (2023). His other singles includes Don't Call Me Back featuring Mayorkun, Call, Sip (Alcohol), Body & Soul, Game Over with Haitian DJ and record producer Michael Brun and Adenuga featuring Nigerian singer Qing Madi.
He has his own record label Young Legend (named after his nickname), which is partnered with Warner Music Africa.
For SMH, Joeboy has teamed up with Nigerian record producer, DJ and singer Tempoe (real name Michael Chigozie Alagwu), with whom he previously worked on the singles Sip (Alcohol) and Door. Tempoe has also produced songs for artists such as Nigerian singers CKay (in particular his hit song Love Nwantiti) and Omah Lay, Nigerian singer/rapper Victony and American singer Jason Derulo.
SMH is Joeboy's latest single and was released on 6th February. It's described as a "hypnotic fusion of Afrobeats with rich Indian and Middle Eastern influences". The lyrics are a mix of Pidgin, English and a Nigerian language, I think. It will likely be included on Joeboy's upcoming 3rd studio album.
The title is short for "Something's Missing Here" and is about realising that some relationships aren't meant to last for ever. Check out the info box on YouTube for more on the song. A lyric/visualiser video was uploaded on 6th February, followed by an official visualiser.
This is the official visualiser which premiered on 19th February.
