Last year I started a series called Asian Groups, sharing music from Asian boy bands and girl groups. It's a "semi-regular" series (my last post was in September), similar to C-pop Saturday! I intended to feature both East and Southeast Asian groups, but it's mainly been Southeast Asian so far.
I've covered J-pop, K-pop and C-pop quite a lot on the blog already, so the aim is to feature groups from other countries. (I tend to write about Indian music/Bollywood separately but I may feature a South Asian groups in future. (I'm not sure if there are that many though. Let me know if you have a favourite South Asian group!) :)
Update 7/3/24: I've just come across a brand-new Indian girl group called WiSH, so will definitely do a feature on them in future! :)
I'm planning to carry on this series in 2024. Today I'm featuring Filipino boy band 1st.One and Thai girl group RedSpin.
1ST.ONE
1st.One (also written as 1ST ONE or First.One) is a boy band from the Philippines. They were formed by the South Korean entertainment company First.One (the company's first Filipino group), from which they take their name. They were originally known as VJBros. The process of putting the group together took several years, up to their debut in 2020 and prior to the group's first single release, they won several awards in dance competitions.
1st.One consists of 6 members- leader ACE (real name Val Jon Librea), MAX (Carlo Edwin Fernandez II), main rapper ALPHA (Jonas Cryone Cruz), J (Jesper Kyle San Agustin), Joker (Philip Russel Balicad) and Jason (Jayson Lee). ACE was previously a solo singer, who released several singles before joining the band. Jason has Korean and Filipino heritage.
The group debuted in July 2020 with the single You Are The One (Ttak Maja Nuh). Their second single OH! was released in August 2021 and they were joined by Gift for the song. To date 1st.One have released 6 more singles- SHOUT OUT, Turn Up, Dahil Sa Mahal Kita (Thousand Years of Love), PROBLEM CHILD, ORAS and their most recent, DITO (plus a couple of promotional singles). They haven't brought out an EP or album so far.
1st.One's music is P-pop (Pinoy/Filipino pop), also mixed with other genres such as hip hop and R'n'B. They signed to Warner Music Philippines in 2022.
You Are The One (Ttak Maja Nuh)
You Are The One was 1st.One's debut single, released in July 2020. The second sentence is Korean and also means "You are the one". It's a mostly Filipino song with a few English lines (and the Korean sentence from the title). Click "Subtitles/closed captions" on YouTube for English subtitles! :)
SHOUT OUT
SHOUT OUT was the group's third single and came out in January 2022, signalling their comeback after a hiatus. It's a pop-rock/dance song and (as with You Are the One), is sung mostly in Filipino, with a few English lines. The Tagalog lyrics are a tribute to the 7,500 Filipino soldiers who fought alongside South Korean soldiers in the Korean War in 1950.
DITO
And finally, here is DITO, their latest single. It came out last October. This is the official performance video.

RedSpin
Thai girl group RedSpin (who started out as BHX UNA) made their debut as a 6-piece in late 2019, under Thai record label BH Brickhouse. They later signed to the record label and entertainment agency WYNN Entertainment.
The original members were leader Pepe (real name Cholpassorn Sangyingyoungwattana), Pimmy (Praephilai Khanthee), main rapper PearPunch (Achirya Samrunphayomsuk), Porsche (Nishapang Suksawatnachok), Diary (Peeraka Wongniwatkajorn), and FahProud (Praowprakaaifah Sae-tan).
FahProud left the group in 2021, choosing to stay with BH Brickhouse rather than move to WYNN Entertainment with the rest of the girls. She went on to become a solo artist, releasing her debut single si6kteen in April 2022. In June last year, Diary also left due to educational reasons, so RedSpin is now a 4-member group.
The band released their debut digital single FANZONE in December 2019. Subsequent digital singles include Tie Me Up, Just Break Up, MULTIVERSE, Loneliness, YaA! and their latest, Untold Story. They have also brought out several special singles. In October 2022, their 1st mini album The Multiverse of Love Spin was released.
FANZONE
This is FANZONE, the girls' 1st single. It was released in December 2019 and the music video features all 6 members. English subtitles available! :)
MULTIVERSE
MULTIVERSE was RedSpin's 7th digital single and the pre-release single from their debut mini album The Multiverse of Love Spin. It was released in March 2022.
The video features 5 members , since it was prior to Diary's departure.
Untold Story
And here is Untold Story, RedSpin's latest single, which was released in November. It's a slow, introspective song about secretly being in love with your friend, who's now in a relationship with someone else.
This is the Aesthetic Video. There's also a performance video and a winter version, both uploaded in December.
