2022 VMA Performances- Jack Harlow feat. Fergie + Anitta

Last week I wrote a post featuring Korean girl group BLACKPINK's performance at the recent 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. You can read it here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2022/09/2022-vma-performances-blackpink.html

In this week's follow-up post I'm sharing performances from Jack Harlow, (who was a co-host of the show along with LL Cool J and Nicki Minaj) and Fergie, and Brazilian singer Anitta.

Update 10/9/23: As I said in the BLACKPINK post, they've made the previous year's performance videos private, which is really annoying! I will update this with what videos I can find.

Jack Harlow feat Fergie- First Class

American rapper and VMA co-host Jack Harlow opened the show by performing his latest single First Class, joined by Fergie, the singer of Glamorous, which First Class samples.

Jack (full name Jackman Thomas Harlow) started out by making mixtapes while still in high school and self-released his first, Extra Credit in June 2011.  He went on to release his first EP The Handsome Harlow in November 2015. It was followed by the mixtape 18, after he'd graduated in June 2016. He has released several singles from his mixtapes, but his breakthrough single was WHAT'S POPPIN, released in January 2020. It was very popular on TikTok and also spawned a remix with DaBaby, Tory Lanez and Lil Wayne. It reached No. 2 in the Billboard Charts.

WHAT'S POPPIN was the lead single from Jack's second EP Sweet Action, which came out in March 2020. In December that year he released his debut album That's What All They Say, which also included the original track and remix.  To date he has released 3 more mixtapes- Gazebo (2017), Loose (2018) and Confetti (2019).

One of his most successful singles to date is Industry Baby, a collaboration with American singer Lil Nas X. It was released in July last year and appears on Lil Nas X's debut studio album Montero. The song won a VMA for Best Collaboration.

First Class is the second single from Jack's second album Come Home the Kids Miss You, which came out in May. The song, which was released in April, samples the 2007 single Glamorous by Fergie aka Stacy Ferguson (former member of American hip hop group the Black Eyed Peas turned solo singer) and featuring rapper Ludacris. Glamorous one of my favourite songs of hers, so it's cool to see it "revived". :)

I can't quite believe the single is now 15 years old!! It's from Fergie's 2006 debut album The Dutchess, which is a good album that I still listen to.

The performance starts with Jack exiting a plane rapping his song, before introducing Fergie, who then starts singing Glamorous.

Update: I've replaced this with a news video featuring a clip:

Anitta- Envolver

Also, Brazilian singer Anitta (real name Larissa de Macedo Machado) made her VMA debut. She performed on the show and became the first Brazilian artist to win a VMA award, coming first in the Best Latin category for her Spanish language single Envolver.

Envolver was the 4th single from Anitta's 5th studio album Versions of Me, which came out in April. The single was released in November last year.

Anitta sings Envolver (which translates as "To Involve" in English), before announcing that she's going to put on as ass-shaking performance!

Update: Here is an animated versioin of Envolver:

P.S. It's a weird time here right now since the Queen just died two days ago. Although this is an entertainment blog, I occasionally address current events on here. She had ruled for 70 years and now her son Charles is King, so it's a big shift. RIP.

25th Anniversary of Mariah Carey's Butterfly Album

My favourite singer Mariah Carey recently released a 25th anniversary edition of her 6th studio album Butterfly. The original album was released on 16th September 1997 and featured songs such as her hit single Honey, The Roof and My All. It was actually the first album I ever bought (on cassette tape, lol) and I still consider it one of my fave MC albums. :) Butterfly was the first album that Mariah had more control over and it is R'n'B, rather than the pop (and later pop/R'n'B) of her previous releases. It also has pop and hip hop influences.  The expanded edition contain 8 extra tracks (the original standard edition has 12)- a duet version of Whenever You Call with Brian McKnight , a new take on The Roof featuring Brandy , live versions of Butterfly and My All, acapella versions of Fourth of July and Outside, an Amorphous Anniversary Club Mix of Butterfly (with DJ Amorphous ) and a remix of Honey (Another Taste of Honey David Morales Mix). Debut XG Mini Album

Japanese girl group XG have released their 1st mini album. It's called NEW DNA and was released on 27th September. XG (whose name is short for Xtraordinary Girls) made their debut in March last year and have brought out 7 singles so far- Tippy Toes, MASCARA, LEFT RIGHT/SHOOTING STAR double single), GVRL GANG , TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. The first 3 songs (or 4 including the double single) aren't on the mini album. The concept behind NEW DNA is that of being a "new species" free from conventions and limitations .  Although the group is Japanese, their creation was inspired by Korean music and they are based in South Korea. They have released songs in English so far and have been described as a global group and "X-pop". NEW DNA consists of 6 tracks- HESONO, X-GENE, GVRL GANG, TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. It is an R'n'B/pop mini album with influences from other genres, such as K-pop, dance and hip hop. My favourite song is PUPPET SHOW. I al
