Last week was the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, held live at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey in the US. The show was hosted by LL Cool J (one of my favourite rappers!), Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow.
While the awards took place on Sunday 28th August, the show wasn't broadcast in the UK until the following day (I think because of the time difference). I watched some of the show but missed the start, so I'm catching up on performances on YouTube.
I'm going to share a few performances from the show, starting with BLACKPINK in this post. :)
BLACKPINK- Pink Venom
Korean girl group BLACKPINK performed their new single Pink Venom live on the night. Due to the rise in popularity of Korean music, there is now a K-pop category in the VMAS! This year BLACKPINK member Lisa won Best Kop for her 2019 single LALISA.
BLACKPINK was formed by YG Entertainment, with the search for a new girl group starting in 2011. The final group debuted in 2016 and consists of 4 members- Jisoo (full name Kim Jisoo, or Jisoo Kim in Western terms), Jennie (Kim Jennie), Rosé (real name Roseanne Park) and Lisa (born Pranpriya Manoban but she has legally changed her first name to Lalisa). Despite Jisoo and Jennie having the same surname/family name (Kim), they aren't related!
The girls have international links, since Lisa is from Thailand, Rosé was born in New Zealand and grew up in Australia, and Jennie studied in New Zealand for several years.
The group debuted on 8th August 2016 with the single album Square One. It included lead singles Whistle and Boombayah, which were both released on the same day and became hits. To date BLACKPINK have released two more Korean single albums, Square 2 (2016) and How You Like That (2020; a Japanese single album, Ddu-Du- Ddu-du (2018), and 3 EPs- Square Up (2018) and Kill This Love (2019), both Korean language, and Blackpink (2018) which is Japanese.
Their debut studio album, titled The Album, was released in October 2020 and their 2nd album Born Pink is due for release on 16th September. They also brought out a Japanese compilation album called Blackpink in Your Area in late 2018. Some of the group's most successful singles to date are Whistle, Boombayah, As If It's Your Last, Kill This Love and How You Like That. They also collaborated with American singer Selena Gomez on the single Ice Cream in 2020.
Pink Venom is a pre-release single from BLACKPINK'S upcoming second album and came out on 19th August. Here is their VMA performance.
Update 9/9/23: They've made the previous year's performance
videos private, which is really annoying! I don't know why they couldn't
leave them up. I've replaced the official upload with a fancam video. I will update this if the video comes back. :)
You can view the full performance on Facebook though: https://www.facebook.com/VMAs/videos/1318766248928724/
Also, if you're in the US you should be able to see a clip on the MTV site (I can't in the UK though!): https://www.mtv.com/vma/video-clips/3csko1/mtv-vmas-2022-blackpink-pink-venom

There is also the Pink Venom challenge on YouTube, where fans (known as BLINKs) upload YouTube videos of themselves dancing to the song. It runs until 15th September, the day before the group's new album comes out. Search #pinkvenomchallenge on YouTube to see the videos.
