It's Eurovision season once again! It seems hard to believe that it's two years since we were in worldwide lockdowns due to the pandemic and 2020's contest was replaced by the virtual event Eurovision: Europe Shine A Light. The 65th Eurovision Song Contest was held in Denmark last year and it was back to normal.
The 66th contest will be held in Turin, Italy this year (this upcoming week and next weekend), due to last year's winners being MÃ¥neskin with Zitti E Buoni ("Shut up and Behave" in English).
The UK's entry is Sam Ryder with SPACE MAN. Read more about Sam and the song here: https://eurovision.tv/participant/sam-ryder-22
We came bottom last year (with zero points!), which was a shame. Poor James Newman! :( To be honest I haven't thought our entries in recent years have been that good. I don't think anyone deserves zero points though, apart from a really bad performance.
I remember that the UK's 2003 entry Cry Baby by Jemini really wasn't that great! The song was alright but the singing was off in the beginning in particular. Voting can often be political as well, but sometimes the entries/performances just aren't that good.
SPACE MAN sounds like a decent song (although not really my style) and Sam has a good voice. Good luck! :)
I normally do two Eurovision posts every year. For 2022 I did a couple of "mini countdown" posts last month, which I'll link to below. Today I'm going to share links to my previous posts, an update from a past contestant and also a bit about the Eurovision spin-off, the American Song Contest! :)

Isaiah (2017 Australian entry)
Australian X-Factor contestant Isaiah Firebrace entered for Australia (who have been allowed to take part in Eurovision since 2015), with the song Don't Come Easy. He did well, coming 9th. At the time he was only 17, one of the youngest contestants to take part (along with Bulgaria's Kristian Kostov). I featured the song as one of my current favourites in 2017: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2017/05/eurovision-faves-and-past-contestant.html
Here is the music video (featured in my 2017 Eurovsion Round-up post): https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2017/05/eurovision-round-up.html
You can also watch Isaiah's performance in the final here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTCP4S1dqwA
Isaiah had previously released his debut self-titled studio album in December 2016. Since entering Eurovision he has brought out several more singles, including Streets of Gold, Know Me Better and More Than Me. He also took part in The Masked Singer Australia in 2020.
This year Isaiah made a bid to represent Australia in Eurovision once again, competing in Australia Decides, along with Evie Irie. Their duet When I'm With You lost out to Sheldon Riley's Not The Same (they came 10th).
Isaiah and Evie released When I'm With You as a single. It's a good song, although to me it doesn't sound very "Eurovision", more of a chart song. You never know what will do well though! It's a shame it didn't get through but I look forward to hearing Sheldon's entry. :)
Here is the official lyric video for When I'm With You:
Random fact: Isaiah recently did a performance with Australian singer and actress Bonnie Anderson, who won S2 of The Masked Singer Australia (the same series/season that Isaiah appeared on). You may also know her as Bea from the long running soap Neighbours (which is sadly being axed this year!). Isaiah is also friends with fellow Eurovision entrant Jessica Mauboy (2018).

AleXa (American Song Contest)
Last month I did a post about American K-pop singer AleXa (full name Alexandra Christine Schneiderman) who is representing her home state of Oklahoma in the first ever American Song Contest, the American version of Eurovison. It is part of my mini countdown Eurovision series. You can find it linked above or here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2022/04/eurovision-countdown-asc-contestant.html
AleXa's song is called Wonderland and she has now got through to the grand final which is on Monday (9th May), two days before the first Eurovision semi-final. The competition has been running since March. Congratulations AleXa! :) Here is her performance at the first semi-final:
