This week's video is GIRLS by Australian rapper and singer The Kid LAROI. It's his latest single and was released on 28th June. LAROI released his debut album The First Time last November, which includes the singles Bleed, Too Much and Love Again. This song will likely be on his next album though, which is called SUMMER ALBUM and is expected to be released later this month.
GIRLS was previewed on TikTok in May, with a snippet that went viral. It's an upbeat, poppy song about the fun and freedom of relationships and is rumoured to be about LAROI's girlfriend Canadian singer Tate McCrae.
The music video features several social media influencers, including American TikTok star Alix Earle and has a fun, party vibe, good for summer. As people mention in the comments on YouTube, it's reminiscent of music and videos from around the early 00s.
Update 17/8/24: GIRLS is on LAROI's new album THE FIRST TIME (DELUXE VERSION) the deluxe release of his debut album of the same name. It just came out on 9th August. Listen to/buy it here: https://thekidlaroi.lnk.to/thefirsttimedeluxe

P.S. Talking of music videos- several music channels shut down on 1st July, including The Box and Kiss. I was a teenager in the late 90s and early 00s and loved music channels growing up. Back then not everyone had the internet and it was very different, so it was often the best way to watch music videos. I remember the days when you could call in to request a song on The Box! One of my faves was LL Cool J's Doin' It, lol.
These days although I watch a lot of videos on YouTube and listen to music on Spotify, I still enjoy watching music channels. I feel a bit sad about their closure, seems like the end of an era, lol. However, I know that times move on and since a lot of music is digital now and people are more likely to watch videos online, they were probably losing money.
Anyway, MTV seems to be here to stay for now! Anyone else a music channel fan? :)
