Debut XG Mini Album

Japanese girl group XG have released their 1st mini album. It's called NEW DNA and was released on 27th September.

XG (whose name is short for Xtraordinary Girls) made their debut in March last year and have brought out 7 singles so far- Tippy Toes, MASCARA, LEFT RIGHT/SHOOTING STAR double single), GVRL GANG , TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. The first 3 songs (or 4 including the double single) aren't on the mini album.

The concept behind NEW DNA is that of being a "new species" free from conventions and limitations.  Although the group is Japanese, their creation was inspired by Korean music and they are based in South Korea. They have released songs in English so far and have been described as a global group and "X-pop".

NEW DNA consists of 6 tracks- HESONO, X-GENE, GVRL GANG, TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. It is an R'n'B/pop mini album with influences from other genres, such as K-pop, dance and hip hop.

My favourite song is PUPPET SHOW. I also like X-GENE but I think that's unlikely to be a single because it's only 1.25 minutes long.

GRL GVNG

The pre-release single was GRL GNG, which came out in June. It's a trap and hip hop song, and I like the laidback beat.

This is the official music video, although not the full version. A common practice with Japanese music (although XG sing in English, they are from Japan) is to only upload short versions of music videos, to encourage you to buy the albums and accompanying DVDs with the full versions. I've especially found this with Avex artists such as my favourite Japanese singers Koda Kumi and Namie Amuro.

XG was formed by the entertainment company XGALX, whose parent company is Avex. (At least I think so, there has been some confusion!)

TGIF

This was the second pre-release single, which was released at the beginning of August. TGIF stands for "Thank God I'm Fly". It's a dance song about having confidence in yourself and not caring what others think of you.


 

NEW DANCE

NEW DANCE was the third single and came out in late August. It's a feel-good song with lyrics about having fun and dancing. Membe rJuria has said that the concept of the track is that she and the other girls are aliens who have arrived on earth and are experincing summer for the first time.

I like the summery vibes of the video! (I'm starting to feel nostalgic for summer now that we're properly into autumn and it's getting colder.)

PUPPET SHOW

The latest single is PUPPET SHOW, which was released on the same day as the EP. It looks at the idea of an alternative world where women are in control and treat men like puppets. My favourite part is the chorus. :)

Weekly Music Video

Sorry there wasn't a 2nd post last week, I was going through a bit of a stressful time and didn't manage to get one finished. :) This week's video is I CONDEMN by Australian singer and rapper The Kid LAROI . It was the first single from the deluxe version of his second album BEFORE I FORGET. The original album was released in January and the deluxe version came out on 24th April. It contains 9 extra tracks, including  I CONDEMN and latest single PIECES. I wasn't aware that there was a deluxe version until I saw that some new songs had appeared on Spotify! I like BEFORE I FORGET and my favourite songs from the original version are ME + YOU, JULY,  COME DOWN and RATHER BE featuring Australian rapper and singer Lithe . One of my fave songs on the deluxe version is QUIT YOU, and I also like HOLD STILL and I CONDEMN. The newest single PIECES came out on out the same day as the album. K-pop Comebacks- BTS

Sorry the 2nd post is later again this week, I didn't manage to get it finished yesterday. :) Last month I started a mini series called K-pop Comebacks, featuring the comebacks of K-pop groups during 2026.
