This week's video is When The Rain Comes by British girl group Sugababes. They were popular from the early 00s to the 2010s, but went through several line-up changes over the years.
The group made their debut in 2000 with the single Overload and their first studio album One Touch, and went on to release 6 more albums throughout their various incarnations, before the original members reformed to release another album.
Sugababes started out with Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhan Donaghy. Siobhan left in 2001 and was replaced by Heidi Range. One of the most successful time periods for the band was between 2001 and 2007, which saw their singles Freak Like Me, Round Round, Hole in the Head and Push the Button get to No. 1 in the UK Top 40 singles chart. Their 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th albums Angels with Dirty Faces, Three, Taller In More Ways and Change also did very well.
Mutya left the group at the end of 2006 and her replacement was Amelle Berrabah. Sugababes re-recorded their 3rd album Taller In More Ways with Amelle's vocals (which went on to become the first of their albums to reach No. 1, followed by 2007's Change). And then in 2009, Keisha (who was the last founding member) left the group, claiming it wasn't her choice to leave, and was replaced by Jade Ewen.
Sugababes' 7th album Sweet 7 was re-recorded to feature Jade and released in March 2010. The group disbanded in 2011. Their upcoming album (which would have been their 8th) was cancelled and their final single was Freedom, which ended up being released as a free digital download on Amazon in September that year.
The founding members Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan reformed as a trio under MKS (since they didn't have the rights to the Sugababes name) and released the single Flatline in September 2013. In 2019 they regained the right to use their original band name and re-released Flatline under Sugababes.
The rebooted Sugababes brought out their 8th studio album (and the 2nd to feature the original members) The Lost Tapes on Christmas Eve (24th December) 2022. The album features songs recorded from 2013 and 2014 when they were making music under MKS. A deluxe version came out on New Year's Eve (31st Dec) 2022). I actually didn't know that they'd released a new album, I just came across their latest single recently!
When The Rain Comes was released on 15th September. The song is a celebration of the people in Sugababes' lives, who stand by them and lift them up. It will be on their upcoming album, set for release next year on their new record label BMG.
This is the official visualiser which features the song lyrics. It was uploaded on 26th September.
It's nice to see Sugababes making music again. Although my favourite line-up was Mutya, Heidi and Keisha, I liked most of their music throughout their career. (I wasn't so keen on the Change era onwards though.) It's cool to see the original trio back together and gives me nostalgia! :)
