BLACKPINK Girls' Solo Careers- Part 2

Sorry there was no 2nd post last week; I didn't manage to get it finished in time. :)

A couple of months ago I wrote a post about the solo careers of the members of Korean girl group BLACKPINK. It ended up being quite a long post, so as with similar posts, I split it up into two parts. Now here is Part 2 featuring LISA and JISOO. :)

 

LISA

6 months after ROSÉ,  the group's main rapper LISA (real name Lalisa Manobal, formerly Pranpiya Manobal) made her own solo debut (the 3rd member to do so). She released her debut single album LALISA in September 2021. 

The single album became the best selling album by a female soloist at the time and broke the record for the highest first-week sales for a female K-pop soloist, which was previously set by ROSÉ (see Part 1). In turn, LISA's record was later broken by bandmate JISOO (see below)! 

Lead single LALISA (released at the same time) was a hit. In October that year, Lisa teamed up with French DJ and record producer DJ Snake, Puerto Rican singer Ozuna and American rapper Megan Thee Stallion for the single SG. And then in November she released Money, the B-side from LALISA as a single, which, like Lalisa, was successful internationally. 

As with her bandmates, LISA took a while before releasing more solo music. After leaving YG Entertainment (for solo music) and Interscope Records (with whom BLACKPINK were signed for global dealings). It came out in October 2023. 

She launched her own management company LLOUD in early 2024,  then partnered with RCA Records. In June 2024 she released ROCKSTAR, (which was the lead single from her debut studio album Alter Ego) and the first single to be released on  LLOUD and RCA).

Earlier this year, LISA made her acting debut, playing Mook in Season 3 of the hit American TV show The White Lotus. 

In February this year, Alter Ego was released. It was quite successful, debuting at No. 7 on the US Billboard 200 and Top Album Sales charts. In South Korea it charted at No. 6 on the Circle Retail Album Chart. The album also reached Top 10 in several countries (including here in the UK) and Top 20 in others.

Alter Ego is described as a conceptual album, featuring LISA's 5 alter egos- ROXI, SUNNI, KIKI, SPEEDI and VIXI. Each one is represented by a song, ROXI's is ROCKSTAR, SUNNI's is Moonlit Floor (Kiss Me), KIKI's song is New Woman, SPEEDI appears on the track Lifestyle and VIXI's song is FXCK UP THE WORLD.

The lead single from Alter Ego was ROCKSTAR (also the first single to be released through LLOUD and RCA). It preceded the album's release, coming out in June 2024. 

LISA has released 4 more singles from the album- New Woman featuring Spanish singer Rosalía, Moonlit Floor (Kiss Me), BORN AGAIN featuring Doja Cat and singer RAYE, and Fxck Up the World featuring American rapper Future. There's also a solo version of FUTW.

In addition, she released several other songs from the album this year (although I don't think they were official singles), including WHEN I'M WITH YOU with South African singer Tyla, Chill and Dream. Most recently she featured on American band Maroon 5's' single Priceless in May.

 

LALISA

LALISA was LISA's debut solo single and the lead single from the single album of the same name. Both were released in September 2021.

LALISA is a hip hop song with a mix of Korean lyrics and influences from LISA's Thai culture. The title of both single and single album refers to LISA's full name Lalisa (her birth name is Pranpriya Manobal but she changed it to bring herself good luck).

As with the LALISA single album, the single did very well, reaching No. 1 in Malaysia. No. 2 on the Billboard Global 200 and topping the Billboard World Digital songs chart. The B-side, Money was later released as a single. 

The music video for LALISA is also inspired by Thai culture. It was a record breaker as well, becoming the most viewed debut video and most viewed video by soloist in 24 hours, surpassing records previously set by bandmate ROSÉ for her debut single On the Ground (see Part 1) and Me! by American singer Taylor Swift featuring Brendon Urie (lead singer of now disbanded pop rock band Panic! at the Disco).

ROCKSTAR     

ROCKSTAR was the lead single from Alter Ego and was released ahead of the album in June last year. It was also a hit, giving LISA her first No. 1 on the Global Excl. U.S. chart and reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Global 200.

Additionally, the song was popular in the cover dance world, inspiring dance covers!

ROCKSTAR is a hip hop and hyperpop song and was LISA's first release on both her new record label and her own label. It's an English language song (apart from a couple of Japanese words).

The music video features the first of LISA's alter egos, Roxi and was another record breaker. It was filmed in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand and pays tribute to Thai culture. 

 

 

NEW WOMAN

NEW WOMAN  was the 3rd single from Alter Ego, coming out in August 2024. The track features Spanish pop and flamenco singer Rosalía and is a mixture of English and Spanish lyrics. It's a pop and electronic song, with some trap included and is about LISA reclaiming her identity.

NEW WOMAN charted quite well and the music video was successful too, reaching over 24 million views within the first 24 hours of its release.

 

 

BORN AGAIN

This was the 4th single from Alter Ego to be released, coming after Moonlit Floor (Kiss Me) which came out last October. BORN AGAIN was released this February.

The track is a collab with American rapper/singer Doja Cat and British singer RAYE and is described as a post-breakup empowerment anthem. It started out as a demo version by RAYE, which she leaked after leaving Polydor Records in 2021. It's a pop, electropop and disco song. 

BORN AGAIN became LISA's first No. 1 in her native Thailand, charting at No. 1 on the Official Thailand Chart and did well in other countries too.  It just won Best K-pop at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards.

The music video features the 3 stars and defines "Born Again" as "The transformation into a New Woman who embraces her freedom to become the person she decides to be".

 

WHEN I'M WITH YOU

Also in February, LISA brought out WHEN I'M WITH YOU, another song on Alter Ego. I don't think it's an official single though.

DREAM feat. Kentaro Sakaguchi

DREAM was released as a song from Alter Ego in February (although not as an official single). A short film starring LISA and Japanese actor and model Kentaro Sakaguchi came out on 13th August. Following its release, DREAM became LISA's second No. 1 in Thailand (following BORN AGAIN; see above).

JISOO

JISOO (full name Kim Ji-soo, or Ji-soo Kim in the Western way), was the final member to release solo music, bringing out the single album ME in March 2023. The lead single FLOWER and B-side All Eyes On Me were released at the same time.

ME debuted at No. 1 in the Korean Circle Album Chart and broke the records previously set by bandmates ROSÉ and LISA for the best-selling album by a Korean female solo artist (JISOO was the first to sell a million copies) 

In February last year, JISOO launched her own record label BLISSOO and this January she signed a solo music deal with Warner Records. Also in January, she announced that she was due to release her debut solo album AMORTAGE and it came out in February (on Valentine's Day).

AMORTAGE is actually an EP/mini album because it only contains 4 tracks on the basic edition- lead single earthquake, Your Love, TEARS and Hugs & Kisses. There is also a digital store edition which has a bonus track and the English version of earthquake, and another digital one called Love, Jisoo which includes an intro and a remix of earthquake. 

JISOO is also an actress. Her acting credits include a lead role in the South Korean TV series Snowdrop (Korean title Seolganghwa) from 2021-2022, the zombie comedy series Newtopia (which aired earlier this year) and the 2025 Korean action fantasy film Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy (Jeonjijeok dokja sijeom).

FLOWER

JISOO's debut solo single FLOWER was the lead single from ME, released in March 2023 alongside the single album. It was her only solo release on YG and Interscope.

As with her bandmates' solo music, JISOO's debut was a success. It got to No. 1 in several Asian countries and No. 2 in both South Korea and the US. 

FLOWER is a pop, dance and trap song which also contains elements from traditional Korean and Caribbean music, and is about moving on from a relationship. It's Korean language (with the odd English lyric).

All Eyes On Me

The 2nd track on ME, All Eyes On Me was released alongside FLOWER (as a B-side) in March 2023. It did quite well, making the Top 10 in several countries. 

All Eyes On  Me is an electropop, dance pop and EDM track, with Korean and English lyrics. Apparently there was a music video but it was never released, so this is the official audio.

 

 

earthquake

earthquake (written in lower case) was the lead single from JISOO's debut mini album AMORTAGE. Both single and mini album were released on the same day in February.

earthquake was her first solo release under her own label BLISSOO. It's an electropop song about new love  (likening falling in love to being hit by an earthquake) and also sung in a mix of English and Korean. The single did well, giving JISOO her first No. 1 on the US Billboard World Digital Songs Chart and reaching the Top 10 in several Asian countries.

The music video was directed by American music video Christian Breslauer and stars JISOO and Korean model turned actor Seung Won Cha/Cha Seung Won. English subtitles available! :)

 

 

Your Love

Finally, here is Your Love. I don't think it was an official single but more of a promotional one. It charted in Korea, Singapore and New Zealand.

Your Love is a romantic, all-English song.  A special music video came out on 12th August. It was in partnership with the Singapore Tourism Board and Mandai Wildlife Reserve in Singapore, and was shot in Rainforest Wild ASIA in Mandai Wildlife Reserve.
