C-pop Saturday

Time for the first C-pop Saturday post of 2023! For those new to the blog, C-pop Saturday is a semi-regular series where I feature C-pop and other styles of Chinese music. I started it back in 2018.

So here is another selection of Chinese music. :)

WayV- Diamonds Only

Diamonds Only, the latest single by WayV (the Chinese sub-unit of Korean boy band NCT) was a Weekly Music Video in December: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2022/12/weekly-music-video_28.html

Shi Shi feat. KIRE- [jagi]

Here is [jagi] by Shi Shi and featuring KIRE. Shi Shi (real name Sun Sheng Xi) is a Taiwanese-Korean singer.* She has Taiwanese heritage and was born in South Korea. She got started in the music business after taking part in the Taiwanese reality singing competition Chinese Million Star in 2012.

Shi Shi went on to release her debut album Girls in August 2014 and the 2nd singleoff  the album, Constant Temperature, is one of her most popular songs to date. Her other singles include Lost on the Way, Realer Love featuring sunkis and [jagi].

She has brought out 4 more albums since her debut- Between (2016), Woman (2018), Shi's Journey (2018), which won Best Mandarin Album at the 30th Golden Music Awards (also known as GMA30), and Where is SHI? (2020). Her style of music is pop and R'n'B.

Shi Shi teamed up with Taiwanese singer KIRE (Kire Yung) for [jagi], which is sung in a mixture of Chinese (Mandarin, I think), English and Korean! It was released in June last year but I just came across the song on Spotify a couple of months ago.

Update 12/2/23: The title of the song is the Korean word Jagi, which is from "jagiya", a term of affection that translates as "Darling, honey or baby" in English.

Julia Wu- late night cruising

Next up is late night (written in lower case), a recent song from Australian born Chinese singer Julia Wu. It's from her latest album IDFK (I'm guessing that it's short for I Don't F**ing Know?!) which was released on 2nd December.

late night cruising is a Chinese and English language song, and the video also came out on 2nd December.

Also check out if only you, which I featured in my last C-pop Saturday post, back in November: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2022/11/c-pop-saturday.html

NICKTHEREAL- Chinese title

Finally, here is a new song by Taiwanese singer/rapper NICKTHEREAL aka Nick Chou. It has a Chinese title which, according to Google Translate,  means "Three Passes" in English. It's the theme song for the mobile game Paradise W by NCSOFT.

This song is also a mix of Chinese and English. The video premiered on 13th January.

Visit the C-pop Saturday post linked below for a collab between Nick, Julia Wu and other Asian singers. :)

Hope you liked the post! :) What Chinese music are you listening to currently?

South Indian Videos

I've written several Bollywood posts this year but I don't feature South Indian music/films as much. So today I'm sharing some music and dance videos from Tollywood ( the Telugu language film industry) and Kollywood (the Tamil language film industry). :) Oo Antava Mawa- Pushpa- Dance Cover by Sonali First up is a dance cover of the song Oo Antava Mawa..Oo Oo Antava from the 2021 Tollywood film Pushpa: The Rise- Part 1 . I previously featured a dance cover of Oo Antava Mawa in a Dance Videos post in August last year. That one is by Rang De and you can see it here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2023/08/dance-videos.html This cover is by Indian choreographer Sonali Bhaduria, from LiveToDance with Sonali and was uploaded in January 2022. It's a shorter video.   For more on Pushpa and to watch the official Oo Antava Mawa video, check out my Tollywood Videos Round-up 2 post from September 2023: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2023/09/tollywood-videos-round-up-2.html ...

Weekly Music Video

Sorry there wasn't a 2nd post last week, I was going through a bit of a stressful time and didn't manage to get one finished. :) This week's video is I CONDEMN by Australian singer and rapper The Kid LAROI . It was the first single from the deluxe version of his second album BEFORE I FORGET. The original album was released in January and the deluxe version came out on 24th April. It contains 9 extra tracks, including  I CONDEMN and latest single PIECES. I wasn't aware that there was a deluxe version until I saw that some new songs had appeared on Spotify! I like BEFORE I FORGET and my favourite songs from the original version are ME + YOU, JULY,  COME DOWN and RATHER BE featuring Australian rapper and singer Lithe . One of my fave songs on the deluxe version is QUIT YOU, and I also like HOLD STILL and I CONDEMN. The newest single PIECES came out on out the same day as the album. I CONDEMN was released on 17th April. As with the songs on the original BEFORE I FORGET, it...

K-pop Comebacks- BTS

Sorry the 2nd post is later again this week, I didn't manage to get it finished yesterday. :) Last month I started a mini series called K-pop Comebacks, featuring the comebacks of K-pop groups during 2026. The first one was about BLACKPINK and you can see it here:  https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2026/03/k-pop-comebacks-blackpink.html Today I'm focusing on BTS (one of the most popular Korean boybands ). They debuted in 2013 and are a 7-member group, made up of leader RM, formerly known as Rap Monster (real name Kim Nam Joon), SUGA (Min Yoon Gi), Jin (full name Kim Seok Jin), j-hope (Jung Ho-seok), Jimin (Park Ji Min), V (Kim Tae Hyung) and Jungkook (Jeon Jung Kook). * Since then, the boys have been very successful, not only in South Korea but internationally. They are probably one of the most well-known K-pop bands worldwide.  In June 2022, the group took a break while the members served their  mandatory military service in Korea and have also been concentrat...
