Asian Groups- Indonesian Girl Group

Time for another instalment in my Asian Groups series! Today I'm featuring Indonesian girl group no na. :)

Note: Currently, Indonesians are going through a difficult time, after the killing of a delivery driver led to protests in several cities, which have spread to some other South East Asian countries. Thinking of people in those countries. :)

They are a 4-member group and were formed by American record label and mass media company 88rising, with 3 of the members meeting at their 2022 Head in the Clouds festival in Jakarta in 2022 and the 4th joining later. Their name (which is written in lower case) comes from the Indonesian word "nona", which means "young lady" or "miss" in English.

no na joined several other Indonesian acts on 88rising, including Rich BrianNIKI and Stephanie Poetri.

The members are Christy (full name Denial Christian Gardena), Esther (Esther Geraldine Simanjuntak), Baila (Bailia Shaquanda Fauri) and Shaz (full name Shazfa Adeysa Zahra). They come from Jakarta, Bali and Lombok. The girls all had previous dance or music experience.

Christy is a ballet dancer  and won 3rd place in the 2019 International Dance Asia competition (in the duo category). She is also popular on TikTok. Both Esther and Baila were contestants on reality music shows- Esther on Indonesian Idol and Baila on Indonesian Idol Junior.

Baila went on to release two singles, Rarity and Keep It Hush with DJ, composer and producer Dipha Barus and singer Afgan, and Baila also shared original music and covers on social media. In addition, Shaz was a member of the Australian K-pop cover dance crews DULCET and EUTONE. Christy, Baila and Shaz  were the first 3 members of the group and then Shaz recommended that Esther join.

no na made their debut in May this year, with the single shoot. It was successful with millions of streams.

Then in July, the group released their debut EP orchids (lullabies). To date they have brought out two more official singles, the double a-side superstitious/falling in love in May) and sad face :( and also uploaded music videos for tracks from the EP.

shoot

no na's debut single shoot was released on 2nd May. It's a R'n'B/pop English language song. The music video showcases the beauty of Indonesia's landscape, ranging from rice paddies to beaches.

superstitious

superstitious was the group's 2nd single, released, alongside falling in love (see below). on 15th May. Both songs have English lyrics.

superstitious is a pop song that also features elements of contemporary R'n'B and synth funk. I especially like the slower breakdown part that starts around 2.18 minutes.

falling in love

And falling in love is a love song (as hinted as by the title! lol). This is the official performance video. I love the  beautiful location, shot at sunset. :)

sad face :(

Finally, here is sad face :(, their latest single. It's a collaboration with 88rising and was released on 29th August. It's a pop song with R'n'B vibes about relationship problems (also English language).

This is the official audio. There is a music video but it's not currently available on YouTube, only on Apple Music  (which I don't have!). Maybe they will upload it on YT in the future. You can see reaction videos on YouTube though.

Please note that the song contains explicit lyrics. :)

New Unexpected

We're finally getting the new season of the reality TV series Unexpected in the UK! Season 3 was shown in the US last summer , and I wondered when we'd get it here. I don't have any online streaming services so thought I'd just watch clips on YouTube, lol. However it's now starting here in early March. Similar to the popular MTV franchise Teen Mom , Unexpected focuses on teen parents. The first series featured 3 couples expecting babies- Lily Bennett and her boyfriend James Kennedy who have daughter Aaliyah, now 2;  Mckayla Adkins and partner Caelan Morrison who have son Timothy, also known as Timmy (and now daughter Gracelynn , born in January 2019), and  Lexus Scheller and boyfriend Shayden Massey who have daughter Scarlett. Season 2 saw the departure of Lilly and the addition of 3 new pregnant girls and their partners- Laura Barron and her boyfriend (now husband) Tylor Stawmyor who have son Lucas (and have since had another baby , a 2nd son, who is named Leo), ...

South Indian Videos

I've written several Bollywood posts this year but I don't feature South Indian music/films as much. So today I'm sharing some music and dance videos from Tollywood ( the Telugu language film industry) and Kollywood (the Tamil language film industry). :) Oo Antava Mawa- Pushpa- Dance Cover by Sonali First up is a dance cover of the song Oo Antava Mawa..Oo Oo Antava from the 2021 Tollywood film Pushpa: The Rise- Part 1 . I previously featured a dance cover of Oo Antava Mawa in a Dance Videos post in August last year. That one is by Rang De and you can see it here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2023/08/dance-videos.html This cover is by Indian choreographer Sonali Bhaduria, from LiveToDance with Sonali and was uploaded in January 2022. It's a shorter video.   For more on Pushpa and to watch the official Oo Antava Mawa video, check out my Tollywood Videos Round-up 2 post from September 2023: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2023/09/tollywood-videos-round-up-2.html ...

25th Anniversary of Mariah Carey's Butterfly Album

My favourite singer Mariah Carey recently released a 25th anniversary edition of her 6th studio album Butterfly. The original album was released on 16th September 1997 and featured songs such as her hit single Honey, The Roof and My All. It was actually the first album I ever bought (on cassette tape, lol) and I still consider it one of my fave MC albums. :) Butterfly was the first album that Mariah had more control over and it is R'n'B, rather than the pop (and later pop/R'n'B) of her previous releases. It also has pop and hip hop influences. The expanded edition contain 8 extra tracks (the original standard edition has 12)- a duet version of Whenever You Call with Brian McKnight , a new take on The Roof featuring Brandy , live versions of Butterfly and My All, acapella versions of Fourth of July and Outside, an Amorphous Anniversary Club Mix of Butterfly (with DJ Amorphous ) and a remix of Honey (Another Taste of Honey David Morales Mix). I had previously heard the D...
