Girls vs Boys- J-pop

Haven't done one of these in a while, the last one was in June, and the last J-pop themed Girls vs Boys was in 2013! Today's it between Japanese girl group E-girls and boyband THE RAMPAGE from EXILE TRIBE.

Note:  Avex videos are now blocked from being shown on third party applications. If you click on the videos you can watch them fine on YouTube. :)

E-girls My Way

For my first post on E-girls (who are the sister unit of EXILE) visit this link:

In 2017 E-girls changed their line-up and there are now 11 members instead of  the original 19. Also they are part of the larger collective E.G. Family, which consists mainly of female members.

This is My Way featuring Japanese reggae groups FIRE BALL and MIGHTY CROWN  and dance/electro group PKCZ®. It was released in August and is a reggae type song. I'm not sure if this is the full song.

RAMPAGE are part of the supergroup EXILE TRIBE, which is also …

Weekly Music Video

This is Freedom, the latest single by  Canadian Chinese singer Kris Wu (former member of Korean/Chinese boyband EXO) featuring American singer Jhené Aiko. It's cool to see Kris team up with Jhené since I like both their music. :) The song has a chilled out kind of vibe, then a good beat.

Freedom was released on 14th September and the music video was uploaded to YouTube on 8th October. (I'd previously included the audio in my Sept New Music/Videos post). Please note that the song contains swearing. :)

In August I did a round-up of the Bollywood posts on the blog so far in 2018. You can read that here:

I'm currently working on a new J-pop themed post, but for now I decided to do a similar post about the J-pop posts I've done on Star Sparkle so far in 2018.  So here we go. :)

Weekly Music Video

This week's video (or audio) is Don't Let Go by Jeffrey Chang. He's a Canadian singer who appeared on Canada's Got Talent.

Don't Let Go is from Jeffrey's EP Project 101, which is available on his website to download for free. (Thanks Jeffrey!). :) He also explains the story behind the tracks on the site (see below for link). The Don't Let Go audio was uploaded in August. I came across it last month and included it in September's New Music/Videos post. It's about a complicated relationship.

New Mariah Carey Video

My favourite singer Mariah Carey has a new single. I included it in my recent New Music/Videos post. It's been ages since Mariah's released anything (her last album was 2014's Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse, and last single was I Don't released in early 2017), so I was excited to see she had a new video! It's called GTFO (short for Get The F**k Out) and was released on 13th September.

GTFO is a promotional single from Mariah's upcoming 15th studio album, due out later this year. The first official single from the album will be With You, which is set for release on 5th October.

Please note that the song is explicit. :)

This is Spirit, a new song by Canadian music duo Majid Jordan. It's one of two new singles along with All Over You. I featured both in last week's New Music/Videos post. Both were released on 7th September. Their most recent album is last October's The Space Between. (Spirit and All Over You aren't on it though).

Spirit is my favourite of the two, nice, chilled R'n'B. It's an audio but if there's a video later I'll update this post. :)

Namie Amuro Retirement

Japanese singer Namie Amuro (also known as Amuro Namie in the Japanese style) is retiring. She announced on her 40th birthday last year that she will retire on 16th September 2018, 4 days before she turns 41. One of the most popular J-pop singers with a career spanning 26 years, Namie has the title "Queen of Japanese pop". She started out as the lead singer in girl group Super Monkey's aged 14, before going solo in 1995 with the single Body Feels EXIT. Her music catalogue includes 47 singles, 12 studio albums and 7 compilation albums. She gave her final concert tour in June at Tokyo Dome and will hold her final concert this weekend. Her  last album was the compilation Finally, released last November, and the final single was Hope. If I find an official upload I'll post it. (Unofficial ones often get taken down).

Namie is one of my favourite J-pop singers. I have 4 of her albums, PLAY (2007), BEST FICTION (2008), Past Future (2009) and _genic (2015). I wil…

Unexpected (full title Unexpected: Teenage & Pregnant) is an American reality TV series following the lives of pregnant teenagers and their partners, and their journey into parenthood. It's the TLC version of the hit show 16 and Pregnant, which spawned the spin off Teen Mom. The first series/season was shown last year, and Series 2 was shown in the US this summer and has just started in the UK.

Season 1 followed  16 year old Lilly Bennett and her boyfriend James,  15 year old Lexus Scheller and boyfriend Shayden, 17, and Mckayla Adkins 16 and her boyfriend Caelan Morrison. Lilly gave birth to daughter Aaliyah Rose, Lexus had a daughter named Scarlett, and McKayla had son Timothy (Timmy).

All 3 of the girls' mums were also teen mothers, and in Lexus' case her grandmother was a teen mum too.

S2 catches up with Mckayla and Lexus, and introduce some new girls and their boyfriends. I'm focusing mainly on the girls here, like with my Teen Mom posts. :)

Today's video is Kamariya from the new Bollywood film Stree. It's a horror comedy based on the true story of a town called Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh, where men have started disappearing.  The inspiration is also an Indian folk legend called Nale Ba. (I'd never heard of this before today; it's good to learn new things!). It's about a mysterious woman nicknamed Stree,  a witch who tries to lure men out of their houses by calling their names in the voices of their relatives, (This actually reminds me of the Eastern European vampire legends where dead people where said to rise from their graves and prey on their relatives and neighbours. I can't find a direct reference online, but I'm sure there were stories where they'd try and call their family members outside to join them). Nale Ba means something like "Come Tomorrow" in Kannada and this is what people would write on their houses to prevent Stree from accomplishing her goal.

Teen Mom UK Is Back

Teen Mom UK (the British version of the American reality show Teen Mom) is back for a new series. There are some changes for Series 4 since mums Megan Salmon-Ferrari and Mia Boardman are taking a break and new girl Shannon has joined.

Megan is taking a break to focus on herself and some personal projects, while Mia is taking time out to focus on her new relationship and daughter Marliya. Megan appears in the first episode of the new series and reveals that she has split from boyfriend Dylan (father of McKenzie, 2 and Dulcie Mae, 1. During previous series we saw her struggling with her relationship  with Dylan, who she took back after he cheated on her with her best friend, and dealing with depression.  Mia also had a difficult relationship with her ex Manley and they had to find the best way to co-parent Marliya when they finally split (after reuniting several times previously).

This is an audio, but there is an official video released in May featuring Bazzi by himself:

New Ariana Grande Album

American singer Ariana Grande has just released her 4th album. It's called Sweetener and came out yesterday. The album consists of 15 tracks and there are collaborations with rapper Nicki Minaj, singer Pharell Williams and Missy Elliot.

Note: The track names are written in lower case, so that's how I'm writing them here. Some of the songs are explicit. :)

My favourite song is God is a woman, the 2nd official single from the album (have just bought that on iTunes). Another good one is goodnight n go. I also like everytime, breathin, better off and a couple of others. Here are a few of my faves. :)

The first single from Sweetener was no tears left to cry, which I posted as a Weekly Music Video in April:

Last month I shared the videos for the light is coming featuring Nicki Minaj and God is a woman (my favourite song from the album):

Some of Simi's most well known singles are Tiff, E No Go Funny and Love Don't Care. Other songs include One Kain and Complete Me, both of which can be found on her second studio album Simisola (2017). She also released the collaborative EP Chemistry with Nigerian rapper Falz in 2016.

Today's music video is Thru These Tears by American band LANY. It's the first single from their upcoming 2nd album Malibu Nights and is about lost love. The inspiration behind the song is thought to be lead singer Paul Klein's break up with British singer Dua Lipa. Paul also has a new look. I miss his long hair! lol. But it's good to have a change sometimes. :)

Thru These Tears was released in July and the official music video came out on YouTube on 2nd August.

This week's video is LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME by Japanese girl group BananaLemon. The group was formed by the producer STY and is made up of 4 members- leader and main vocalist Nadia (who is Japanese and Filipina and also has Spanish, Chinese and Russian heritage), other lead vocalist Saarah (who is half Japanese and half African American and lived in Los Angeles as a child), R!No and Mizuki. There's also said to be a "hidden" 5th member, like with the K-pop group K.A.R.D. The meaning of BananaLemon is a mix between sour and sweet.

The band started out in 2017 with the song #SorryNotSorry. (Though I don't think they've made their official debut yet). Other singles include GIRLS GONE WILD, FOREVER YOUNG and I WANNA, I WANNA.

The LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME video came out on 30th July. Click "Subtitles/Closed Captions) when viewing  the video on YouTube to see English subtitles!

Dance Moms Girls Updates- Part 3

Earlier this year I started a series of posts about what the girls from reality show Dance Moms have been up to since the show ended last year. Now it's time for the third instalment. Didn't plan to take this long, but never mind! This time I'm focusing on JoJo, Brynn and Camryn. :)

You can read the first two posts here:

JoJo Siwa

JoJo (full name Joelle) and her mum Jessalyn joined Dance Moms in Series/Season 5 . She was originally a finalist on S2 on Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition (the youngest contestant at 9), then went on to join Dance Moms in  2015. Nicknamed "JoJo with the BowBow" due to her habit of wearing a bow in  her hair, she later released her only selection of hair bows with Claire';s (formerly Claire's Accessories, that's how I still think of it!). Her strongest dance styles are …
