New Mariah and Christina Songs

Sorry the 2nd post is later this week; I've been having internet problems. :)

Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera (two of my favourite singers) have released new music. I was pleased to see that because it's been a while since both have had any new releases! :)

Mariah Carey

Save The Day with Ms Lauryn Hill

First up is Save The Day, Mariah's new single. It features singer and rapper Lauryn Hill, and contains a sample from Killing Me Softly, the hit song by Lauryn's group The Fugees (now disbanded).

The idea for Save the Day actually came 9 years ago! Mariah and her friend rapper and record producer Jermaine Dupri were originally planning to release it as a charity single. The plans didn't come together back then, but it's now being released and is very relevant with its message of hope during this difficult time

Save The Day is the lead single from Mariah's upcoming new album The Rarities, her 8th compilation, which is due out on 2nd October. I'm looking forward to that, it contains some songs I don't think I've heard. She is also releasing her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey on 29th September.

I like the way the song starts out slow, then picks up and the beat comes in. This is the official audio and was uploaded on 20th August. I heard there was a video coming but no sign of it yet. Will update this post as and/when there is one. :)

Update 23/10/20: The official lyric video for Save the Day has just been uploaded:

Christina Aguilera

Loyal Brave True (Mulan)

Back in the late 90s Christina sang Reflection, the theme song from the 1998 Disney animation Mulan, her debut single. She was 17 at the time. Now with the release of the new live action film, she has recorded a new version (see below), and also brought out the new song Loyal Brave True.

The 2020 Mulan was due to be released in March but was pushed back due to the coronavirus. It's now available for streaming exclusively on Disney+. I'm looking forward to seeing it because I'm a fan of the original animation (went to see it at the cinema), but don't have Disney+. Hopefully they will show it on Sky+ and other digital TV platforms soon!

Side note: Does anyone remember those Mulan burgers that McDonald's used to do?! I really liked them, lol. I'm feeling nostalgic now, I was 14 when the original film came out!

The new song is a rousing ballad about being loyal, brave and true to yourself and your family. The video came out on 14th August.

Chinese American singer CoCo Lee also sang a Chinese version of Reflection and was the voice of Fa Mulan (Fa is the family name) in the Mandarin release of the movie. In the American, English language version Mulan was voiced by American actress Mina Na-Wen (who was born on the island of Macau) and her singing voice was provided by Filipina singer and actress Lea Salonga

In the new live action film, Chinese born American actress Yifei Lui (also known as Lui Yifei) plays Mulan and also sings the Mandarin version of Reflection. Check out the other versions of Reflection below:

Korean singer Lee Suhyun, one half of  sibling duo AKMU along with her brother Chanhyuk) has also recorded a Korean version of Reflection: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmI94FXx__M

Hope you enjoyed the post! :) Do you have a favourite out of the two songs? Mine is Save The Day but I like Loyal Brave True too. It was cool listening to the different versions of Reflection too.

25th Anniversary of Mariah Carey's Butterfly Album

My favourite singer Mariah Carey recently released a 25th anniversary edition of her 6th studio album Butterfly. The original album was released on 16th September 1997 and featured songs such as her hit single Honey, The Roof and My All. It was actually the first album I ever bought (on cassette tape, lol) and I still consider it one of my fave MC albums. :) Butterfly was the first album that Mariah had more control over and it is R'n'B, rather than the pop (and later pop/R'n'B) of her previous releases. It also has pop and hip hop influences.  The expanded edition contain 8 extra tracks (the original standard edition has 12)- a duet version of Whenever You Call with Brian McKnight , a new take on The Roof featuring Brandy , live versions of Butterfly and My All, acapella versions of Fourth of July and Outside, an Amorphous Anniversary Club Mix of Butterfly (with DJ Amorphous ) and a remix of Honey (Another Taste of Honey David Morales Mix). I had previously heard the

Debut XG Mini Album

Japanese girl group XG have released their 1st mini album. It's called NEW DNA and was released on 27th September. XG (whose name is short for Xtraordinary Girls) made their debut in March last year and have brought out 7 singles so far- Tippy Toes, MASCARA, LEFT RIGHT/SHOOTING STAR double single), GVRL GANG , TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. The first 3 songs (or 4 including the double single) aren't on the mini album. The concept behind NEW DNA is that of being a "new species" free from conventions and limitations .  Although the group is Japanese, their creation was inspired by Korean music and they are based in South Korea. They have released songs in English so far and have been described as a global group and "X-pop". NEW DNA consists of 6 tracks- HESONO, X-GENE, GVRL GANG, TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. It is an R'n'B/pop mini album with influences from other genres, such as K-pop, dance and hip hop. My favourite song is PUPPET SHOW. I al
