C-pop Saturday

Time for another instalment in my semi-regular series C-pop Saturday! It's been 6 months since my last one (and the only post of the year so far, but never mind, lol.

 

B CRUSH- Crush On

First up is Crush On by B CRUSH.  They are a mixed gender Taiwanese Mandopop group which consists of 4 members- ZAI, YAN, Rebaecca and WEI. I can't find much info about them but will update this if I do find more. :)

B CRUSH made their debut last October with the single Crush On, which appears to be their only single so far. I came across the video a while ago and thought I'd save it to feature in a post sometime, especially because it's fitting for summer.

Crush On is an upbeat pop song with a mix of Chinese (Mandarin) and English lyrics, about a summer encounter on the beach that sparks instant attraction. It has a suitably summery music video. Click "Subtitles/closed captions" on YouTube for English subtitles! The lyrics are on screen but not translated into English. :)

It's cool to see a mixed gender/co-ed Chinese group. As I've mentioned before, the majority of K-pop groups are either all-male or all-female (a notable exception being KARD, who are disbanding/going on hiatus). It seems to be similar with C-pop.

 

Ivy- [Want Me Back ]

This is Want Me Back by Taiwan based singer Ivy. It was her debut single and was released in April. I think she started out doing dance covers. In June Ivy released another single. The Chinese title translates as "Are you just as happy now?" in English.

Want Me Back marked Ivy's first official entry into the music scene. It's a pop song with English and Chinese lyrics.

WayV- Vision Wings

And finally, WayV (the Chinese sub-unit of Korea boyband NCT) just released a new single. It's called Vision Wings and is the title track from their 8th mini album. It follows their 7th EP Big Bands (released in July last year) and their 1st special winter album Eternal White (released in December).

The Vision Wings mini album came out on 10th August. It's WayV's first release since member WinWin left the group (and their record label SM Entertainment) last month. His departure makes him the second member to leave, after Lucas in 2022 (following serious allegations). Both Lucas and WinWin had been on hiatus in 2021/2022 but WinWin returned to the group.

In addition, member Ten left SM Entertainment in April but plans to still be part of WayV and NCT U/NCT. So the group currently consists of 5 members- Kun, Ten, Xiaojun, Hendery and YangYang.. 

Side note: NCT are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year (they debuted in January 2016).

Vision Wings is the lead single/title track from the mini album and was released on the same day. It's a mix of Chinese and Western music, blending traditional Chinese guzheng strings with hip hop. There's also an English version in the mini album.

Weekly Music Video

Sorry there wasn't a 2nd post last week, I was going through a bit of a stressful time and didn't manage to get one finished. :) This week's video is I CONDEMN by Australian singer and rapper The Kid LAROI . It was the first single from the deluxe version of his second album BEFORE I FORGET. The original album was released in January and the deluxe version came out on 24th April. It contains 9 extra tracks, including  I CONDEMN and latest single PIECES. I wasn't aware that there was a deluxe version until I saw that some new songs had appeared on Spotify! I like BEFORE I FORGET and my favourite songs from the original version are ME + YOU, JULY,  COME DOWN and RATHER BE featuring Australian rapper and singer Lithe . One of my fave songs on the deluxe version is QUIT YOU, and I also like HOLD STILL and I CONDEMN. The newest single PIECES came out on out the same day as the album. I CONDEMN was released on 17th April. As with the songs on the original BEFORE I FORGET, it...

Weekly Music Video

This week's video is The Way You Move by American singer JayDon . His real name is JayDon McCrary (his previous stage name was J.D. McCrary) and he started out as a child actor, appearing on a couple of episodes of American TV series K.C. Undercover  in 2015 and going on to voice Young Simba in the 2019 remake of The Lion King .  In January 2018, JayDon released his official debut single Inviting All of You, going on to become the youngest solo artist  to sign with Hollywood Records (part of Disney Music Group ) that summer. He also released the single My Name in August and his debut EP followed in April 2019. Last year, JayDon changed his stage name from J.D. McCrary to his birth name JayDon and released his first single under that name in November, Ah!
