Same Song, Different Singer

Back in August I wrote a post called Samples and Covers which featured original songs that had been sampled and the new/cover versions. You can read that here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2021/08/samples-and-covers.html

Today I'm featuring a few artists who recorded the same song, or at least a very similar version. Rather than covers of older and/or well-known songs, these singers (and one group!) released the songs around the same time, covering different markets.

Mila Mila from the Tollywood film Super/by Tata Young

First up is Mila Mila, a song from the Tollywood (Indian Telugu language) film Super, which was released in July 2005. The playback singer is Anushka Manchanda (who is also an actress and has sung for Bollywood and Kollywood films too).

Thai singer Tata Young also recorded a mostly English version of Mila Mila which featured on her 2006 album Temperature Rising.

I featured them both in a Weekly Music Video post back in 2013: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2013/05/weekly-music-video.html

Want Me, Want Me by Namie Amuro/Aa Khushi Se Khudkhusi Karle from Darling (Bollywood)

Japanese singer Namie Amuro (who is now retired) released the single Want Me, Want Me in April 2005. It was included on her 7th studio album Queen of Hip Pop (released in July 2005) and can also be found on the 2008 compilation BEST FICTION (Namie's 3rd greatest hits album). I have BEST FICTION; good songs on there. :)

In 2007, an Indian cover of Want Me, Want Me called Aa Khushi Se Khudkhusi Karle (something like "Come and Commit Suicide with Happiness" in English) featured in the Bollywood horror film Darling (released in September). The playback singers are Shaan and Sunidhi Chauhan

You can see both videos in my J-pop vs Bollywood post from 2013: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2013/06/j-pop-vs-bollywood.html

Find an English translation of the Want Me, Want Me lyrics here (I knew it was a "sexy" song but didn't realise how much! lol): https://shinitakashi.blogspot.com/2005/04/amuro-namie-want-me-want-me-lyrics.html

And go here for an English translation of the lyrics for Aa Khusi Se Khudkhushi: https://www.filmyquotes.com/songs/3352

Dhoom Machale from Dhoom (Bollywood)/Dhoom Dhoom by Tata Young

Dhoom Machale is from Dhoom (the first in the Bollywood film series), which came out in August 2004. The vocals were provided by Sunidhi Chauhan (who also sang Aa Khushi Se Khudkhushi; see above).

Tata Young sang the remix version and features in the video shown in the movie's end credits.

Both songs were a Weekly Music Video in 2013: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2013/10/weekly-music-video_23.html

Under My Skin by Sarah Connor/MIROTIC by TVXQ! aka DBSK/Tohoshinki

German singer Sarah Connor released the English language song Under My Skin in August 2008. It was the lead single from her 6th studio album Sexy As Hell and did very well in the charts in Europe. She co-wrote the song. The main version from the album (and the single version) is the T.S.O.B mix.

Here's Sarah's Under my Skin:

Korean boyband TVXQ! (also known as Dong Bang Shin Ki aka DBSK in South Korea and Tohoshinki in Japan), released Mirotic in September 2008. It was the title song from their 4th Korean studio album. They also brought out a Japanese version called Jumon: Mirotic in October. Both were No. 1 singles and Mirotic is one of the most successful singles in Korea to date.

The Japanese version of Mirotic (Jumon: Mirotic) was the 3rd single from Tohoshinki's 4th Japanese studio album The Secret Code (2009). That's actually the version I first heard, since I have that album.

While Under My Skin and Mirotic are not technically exactly the same song, they are very similar, so I've included them in this post! Both songs feature the lyrics "I got you under my skin". Mirotic was banned in Korea at one point, due to the "adult" lyrics!

I featured both the Korean and Japanese videos of Mirotic as my first ever Weekly Music Video back in 2011 (10 years ago next month!!). Here's Mirotic (Korean):

And you can watch them both here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2011/12/weekly-music-video.html

Visi this post for the Korean Mirotic lyrics (Romanised, English and Hangul): https://kpopgod.wordpress.com/2013/08/07/mirotic-tvxq-lyrics-romanized-english-hangul/

TVXQ! have now become a duo, consisting of U-KNOW and Max. Check out their more recent song Love Line here: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2020/05/videos-from-my-youtube-playlist-k-pop.html

Zoom (Don't Touch) by Tata Young/Don't Touch (The Zoom Song) Ashley Tisdale

Thai singer Tata Young released the single Zoom (Don't Touch) in 2006. Like Mila Mila (see above), it's from Temperature Rising, her 2nd English album.

It was a Weekly Music video in November 2012: https://starsparklex.blogspot.com/2012/11/weekly-music-video.html

You can see see it directly below (it also mentions Ashley in the title, but it's Tata's video):

American singer Ashley Tisdale then included her own version on her first album Headstrong, released in February 2007. Her version is called Don't Touch (The Zoom Song).

Here is Ashley's Zoom:

The lyrics are a little bit different; I'd say Tata's version is slightly more "adult" than Ashley's! E.g. Tata sings "You won't behave, your hands are all over the place" and Ashley sings, "You won't behave, you're getting all up in my space".

And in Tata's version it's "Gotta want me and not my bed", while Ashley's is "Gotta know me to be my man". It's probably because Ashley started her career in Disney (The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and High School Musical), so would have had a younger fanbase at the time.

Note: Sarah Connor and Tata Young also both sang I Want Some Of That. Maybe I'll include it in another post! :)

Hope you liked the post! :) A few Tata songs featured, so if you're a fan I hope you enjoyed it. Do you have a favourite out of the different versions of the songs? I prefer Tata's Zoom slightly more to Ashley's but like both of them. :)

What songs do you like that have been covered/recorded by more than one person?

P.S. The 2nd post is a bit later this week because I didn't manage to get it finished till night time!

25th Anniversary of Mariah Carey's Butterfly Album

My favourite singer Mariah Carey recently released a 25th anniversary edition of her 6th studio album Butterfly. The original album was released on 16th September 1997 and featured songs such as her hit single Honey, The Roof and My All. It was actually the first album I ever bought (on cassette tape, lol) and I still consider it one of my fave MC albums. :) Butterfly was the first album that Mariah had more control over and it is R'n'B, rather than the pop (and later pop/R'n'B) of her previous releases. It also has pop and hip hop influences.  The expanded edition contain 8 extra tracks (the original standard edition has 12)- a duet version of Whenever You Call with Brian McKnight , a new take on The Roof featuring Brandy , live versions of Butterfly and My All, acapella versions of Fourth of July and Outside, an Amorphous Anniversary Club Mix of Butterfly (with DJ Amorphous ) and a remix of Honey (Another Taste of Honey David Morales Mix). I had previously heard the

Debut XG Mini Album

Japanese girl group XG have released their 1st mini album. It's called NEW DNA and was released on 27th September. XG (whose name is short for Xtraordinary Girls) made their debut in March last year and have brought out 7 singles so far- Tippy Toes, MASCARA, LEFT RIGHT/SHOOTING STAR double single), GVRL GANG , TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. The first 3 songs (or 4 including the double single) aren't on the mini album. The concept behind NEW DNA is that of being a "new species" free from conventions and limitations .  Although the group is Japanese, their creation was inspired by Korean music and they are based in South Korea. They have released songs in English so far and have been described as a global group and "X-pop". NEW DNA consists of 6 tracks- HESONO, X-GENE, GVRL GANG, TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. It is an R'n'B/pop mini album with influences from other genres, such as K-pop, dance and hip hop. My favourite song is PUPPET SHOW. I al
