Girls vs Boys- K-pop

Here is the first Girls vs Boys post of the year. :) It's between K-pop groups AOA and BTS.

AOA are a girl group/band who formed in 2012. Their name is short for Ace of Angels. AOA has 8 members altogether but they are divided into 2 halves. One half is an idol dance group with 5 members and the other half is a band who play instruments (guitar, drums, keyboard and bass). Seol Hun, Cho A, Hye Jeong, Chan Mi, Yu Na,  Ji Min, Min A and You Kyung make up the whole group, all of the members except You Kyung are in the idol group and then You Jyung, Yu Na, Mi Na, Cho A and Ji Min are in the band. AOA describe themselves as 7+1 group. It's a bit confusing but I think I get it now!

There are also two sub units, AOA Black (made up of Ji Min, Cho A, Yu Na, Mi Na and You Kyung)  and AOA White (made up of Seol Hyun, Hye Jeong, and Chan Mi). The concept is that 7 of the members are full angels and You Kyung is half angel and half mortal. You can read about it here: http://www.allkpop.com/article/2012/07/fncs-new-girl-group-aoa-reveals-first-group-photo-more-on-the-mysterious-y

AOA released their debut single album Angel's Story in July 2012. (I thought they also released a single called Angel's Story but there doesn't appear to be one called that). The single album contains the songs Elvis, Love is Only You and Temptation. They have brought out 4 more single albums since then, Wanna Be, Moya (AOA Black's release), Red Motion, all released in 2013, and Miniskirt (2014) and 2 mini albums, Short Hair and Like A Cat (both 2014). In addition the group have released Japanese and Taiwanese versions of some their single albums and EPs and a compilation album, AOA: Best Songs For Asia (2014). Their next release will be a Japanese version of Like A Cat in February.

This is Miniskirt which is from the single album of the same name and was released in January 2014.

BTS (short for Bangtan Sonyeondan, which according to Wikipedia translates as Bulletproof Boy Scouts) are a boyband who debuted in 2013. They are also known as Bangtan Boys. Their music is hip hop and R'n'B rather than K-pop. The group has 7 members, Rap Monster, Jin, Suga, Jimin, V and Jungkook. It started out with a different members but everyone apart from Rap Monster left the original line-up.

BTS released their debut single No More Dream in June 2013 and their first single album 2 Cool 4 Skool the same month. Their second single was We Are Bulletproof Pt.2. 2 Cool 4 Skool was the first of the group's school themed releases. The others, O! RUL8,2? (their debut mini album) and Skool Luv Affair followed  in September 2013 and February 2014. BTS also have a compilation album called 2 Cool 4 Skool/ O!RUL8,2 (which by the sound of it is their two mini albums put together).

Last August the group released their first full length album Dark & Wild. They have also released some Japanese singles and their debut Japanese studio album Wake Up just came out in December.

This is Danger, the first single from Dark & Wild.

J Soul Brothers (Japanese boyband)

I don't know that many Japanese boybands. It's funny but I mostly know Korean groups and Japanese solo singers! I know KAT-TUN, Arashi (although they're more of a rock group, I think) and Hey! Say! JUMP but not many more. A friend recently introduced to me the band (or vocal and dance unit) J Soul Brothers, so I thought today I'd do a post about them. And of course it fits into the J-pop and K-pop theme I'm doing this month! This is a good opportunity to find more J-pop boybands too. :)

The J Soul Brothers were originally formed in 1998 but have gone through two line-up changes. The current incarnation- full title Sandaime (Third Generation) J Soul Brothers from EXILE TRIBE* or J Soul Brothers III- was formed in 2010 by HIRO who is the leader of Japanese boyband EXILE (which has an impressive 19 members!) and founding member of the First Generation J Soul Brothers.  It was decided that EXILE and former Nidaimie (Second Generation) J Soul Brothers members NAOTO and …

So Sharp: Dance Squad

So Sharp: Dance Squad is an American reality TV series about the University of Louisville Ladybird Dance Team run by Todd Sharp. It's set in Louisville, Kentucky. As you'll know if you follow this blog, I'm a fan of dance reality shows such as Dance Moms and Bring It! So I was interested when So Sharp started in the UK a few weeks ago.

Todd is head coach along with Sheryl Knight, a former Ladybird herself. Todd has also coached the Floyd Central Dazzlers. The team have won 15 national championships so far.

As with the other dance reality shows, there's a lot of drama! Marissa Hall is close to Todd and describes him as like a father to her. She is considered one if the best dancers and her close relationship with Todd rubs some people up the wrong way, particularly Michelle Carpenter. Rose Crombie is one of Marissa's main rivals but according to the Decidr article about the team (see below) they're close. Gabrielle Iannone struggles sometimes with the choreograp…

Dance Videos

It's time for another dance post! I thought I'd feature both modern dance and belly dance today. :)

First of all here are a couple of dance videos by choreographer Rumer Noel. This is one to Everyday by Ariana Grande that was uploaded in January. According to comments on YouTube the man dancing with Rumer at the beginning is called Lucas la Parada.
